Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones LTD is their masterpiece but my personal favorite is Headquarters, a very close second

Pisces is easily the Monkees best album, followed very closely by Headquarters, Head and Good Times.

I really could not pick one. If I did, I am leaning on Pisces.

Headquarters (which does in fact contain a big UK hit single in Randy Scouse Git) has been my favourite for many years but listening to them all again recently, Pisces may be starting to edge it.

Then & Now is my favourite compilation.

Except that it is not the full length version which is only available on compilations.

Yeah, I like disc 3 of the Music Box set for an alternate Head experience, minus the movie dialog bits.

I voted Pisces but Missing Links 2 is really good if you remove Come On In.

Since Headquarters came out before the White Album (and before Sgt. Pepper), I remember thinking the first time I heard it in 1967 that it was their Revolver. It had a similar off beat vibe with experimental touches, some sparse instrumental textures, and sometimes a darker vibe than what had come before.

Cheers , Head is therefore a prime candidate

Pisces for me - strong material, all 4 members actively involved throughout and sounds like a unified album unlike most which come across like schizophrenic grab bag compilations.

The songs on Head are all great. The problem is there aren't many of them and they are interspersed with dialogue from the movie so the album is not a particularly satisfying listen. And as mentioned before, the version of Porpoise Song is an edit, missing the final section.

I don't think that they had a masterpiece album, but my favorites are probably Missing Links Vol 2 and Head. Mike Nesmith could have easily produced his masterpiece during the Monkees years, however.
I do think that their '60s albums range from good to excellent. Their reunion album Good Times I'd rate as very good.

HEAD, closely followed by Pisces, Headquarters, and Good Times! (An album each and every one of you should own).

I’d also like to add the honorable mention Dolenz Sings Nesmith (What I just said about Good Times! applies here too).

'Pisces' - the most subversive LP of the 60s.
Songs of drug dealers, groupies, jailbait, acid, suburban protest and
erectile dysfunction all candy-coated and served up hot
    to millions of tweenies.

Pisces; could have been Head if it had a couple more songs.

I can’t quite say ML2 as it’s a compilation, but track for track it’s easily one of the best Monkees albums.

    Total agreement on HEAD.

See, for me that uniqueness/weirdness is what makes HEAD so great. Plus all of the songs are top shelf.

I agree that the full “Porpoise Song” should’ve been on it though. The old Rhino LP and cassette had that. Wish they’d done that for the later CD.
