One of my favorites. I think the first 15 minutes is easier to take if you’ve seen the whole film, but I understand the point if you didn't. I can see why someone might stop, but you sure would be missing a pretty amazing film! And I loved the opening and very creative opening titles, and the soundtrack album too.

I watched Ad Astra yesterday. Not a bad film if you stick with it.

How I Won The War is not a good film. Richard Lester had had three hits in a row (the two Beatles films and The Knack, which is probably his best film), so he was incredibly bankable.

I watched because I was curious about Lennon’s performance (which isn’t a performance, he’s just playing himself) but couldn’t sit through much of it. The film’s Goonish humour has not worn well.

Yeah, it's not a bad film, just a rather uninspired remake of 'Apocalypse Now' set in space and with some daddy issues thrown in. I wasn't sorry I saw it, but I was puzzled as to why anyone would go to the effort of making it.

Agree to disagree - meaning you're wrong!!!

I just hate "Goofball Thor". The 1st 2 movies managed a little comedy, and that was enough - the dude is supposed to be a humorless stiff!

Wish I turned off that stupid "Blair Witch" movie off after 5 minutes...

Instead I watched in the dark in my basement trying to be scared. :realmad:

Birdman. I think that was the dumbest most pretentious piece of film trash I have seen in my 33 years circulating the planet earth.

I think if they had removed the dad stuff (which wasn't emotionally compelling, and besides there was a lot more a stake with the mission) it would have been more streamlined and entertaining.

  14. Just two nights ago I turned off Light Of My Life a Casey Affleck project (written, directed and starring!) after about 5 minutes. The first 5 minutes or more is Casey's character "Dad" telling his daughter a bedtime story that he is making up on the spot. Excruciating stuff!

  15. I actually watched this movie twice and yet I am not a fan! Good acting and direction, but the quirkiness and whole premise bother me -cute, quirky teen girl has wisdom beyond her age (of course she doesn't).

  16. True (based on the comics) but what works on the page and works on the screen as popular entertainment....now Captain America is supposed to be much more of a stiff and, in his case, it largely works.

I can understand that - it's a slow builder with a great ending. Very Robert Altman-esque because it's Robert Altman :D But if you're not getting invested in the characters, then it just doesn't speak to you. It's an "anti-western" - an odd film for sure.

I'm sure this won't be the first Altman film to make this list - yup, I see others have made it already. His films are unique.. he was making his characters sometimes un-understandable on purpose for mood way before Christopher Nolan knew what an "audio mix" was.

And yes, I LOVE The Assassination of Jesse James - love, love it.

Also love Inherent Vice. If you like The Big Lebowski, not sure how you can't embrace it. Boy am I off around here!

The one I turned off was World War Z. 15 minutes is a VERY short window, so it was like voice over and ugly zombies slamming against windows... I've tried a couple of times, but after 10 minutes I'm like "I don't wanna watch this.." Is it any good?

Crazy Rich Asians - My wife started watching it and thought she was missing something, so we watched the first 15-20 minutes together and I confirmed she was missing nothing. It looked like a pilot to a cheesy, big-budget TV show.

Earwig And The Witch - My kids kept watching it, but I went and did other things during the bulk of the movie. This is a made for Japanese TV movie produced by Studio Ghibli, and directed by Hayao Miyazaki's son, Goro. You would think with such a pedigree this movie would be, at least, decent. It is not. The animation is terrible. It reminds me of those cut-rate 3d animated shows on PBS Kids, but with more detail. I guess this can be attributed to the made-for-TV budget, but in that case you don't go cheap on the animation - you lower the level of detail and keep the animation quality high. This is why the original Toy Story holds up relatively well. Also, the story is messy, and the plot seems to spend 15% of screen time on the first act, 80% on the second, and 5% on the last. When it was over, my kids had no idea of what happened or why.

My daughter took me to see that. I didn't mind it.
As a thank you I got her the soundtrack CD. When I went to the store to get it the cute but somewhat clueless clerk asked me if I knew the original versions of the songs. I told her indeed I did. She told me the movie versions were " like , way way better. "

That's totally the problem! The Mighty Thor should never ever be a comedic adventure! Only the first maybe forty minutes of the very first Thor movie was any good, after that they've all been total garbage!
Where ever Thor was in that situation absolutely no one would be cracking jokes! They totally turned him into a laughing stock!

Mank - The cast took me right out of the film. They were too polished Hollywood-types, who looked as if they had just walked out of a salon on Rodeo Dr. I couldn't watch something so cloying, so unrealistic.

Solo: A Star Wars Story - No wonder I had no itch to see it in the theaters. My gut reaction was right; this is in no way the Han Solo of just a few years earlier. No character could have been further from the original than this guy who played a younger Han. Even for a Star Wars film this was an insult to my intelligence.

Won't You Be My Neighbor. Not that it was bad, but I did not realize it was basically a documentary. It might be interesting to those who grew up watching Mr. Rogers, but I didn't and was bored.
