Roxy & Elsewhere ...strictly my opinion, of course, but this is still an essential listen even with The Roxy Performances. ...actually, The Roxy box made me appreciate it more I think. It’s always been a fave. Still is. ...bring on Halloween ‘73!
Had me scared... Been listening to Zappa pretty much solid for the past 2-3 weeks in the hours before bedtime and wow. Some of the songs are cringeworthy but the musicianship and the musicians were always a level above
Halloween 73. Disc 4 the rehearsals Great set. Great liner notes. Joe ateavers mentions that there isn’t a lot of New York Halloween shows in the vault from the 70s due to the union in New York. Notes by Ralph very interesting on his take on when Chester first joined and how they worked things out. Love Magic Fingers much like the 200 Motels version. Even down to FZ reciting what Howard says at the end...it shifts into a very Blues type tune for a minute or so, makes me wonder if the 200 Motels version was like that originally. Wasn’t sure if this release was necessary, after listening twice it is in my top 30 FZ releases.
Used to love going in to NYC for those Halloween shows - annual tradition among my circle of friends. Also one in spring 73 at Nassau Colisseum opened by Leo Kottke, followed by Mahavishnu Orch, then Zappa. I think it was like $7.00 for tickets. My friend went on blotter and his pay (cash, $100 bills) kept falling out of his pocket. Music was good too
I nabbed "Sheik YerBouti" for £5 having resisted due to knowing some of the songs (and their lyrical content) from compilations and partly because of Adrian Belew. Much better than I thought it was going to be but Bobby Brown is still an absolute cringe.

....playing show #1 again..Been through these shows a few times the past few days and they’re addicting. Frank Zappa – Halloween 73 ...nice thing about digital files is you can put the whole show together seamless.
