Despite FZ's comments in the accompanying booklet re: the added Bass & Drums I too was extremely shocked by what I heard, I still prefer the original (of course) but I've kinda gotten used to the overdubs (only taken 33 years!) now & do play it occasionally for a different take on the album, some tracks still grate though.
I downloaded and listened to Zappa '77 10/30 show and several songs from the 31st that were not played on the 30th (Black Napkins, Bobby Brown, Conehead, Flakes & Big Legged Emma and also Wild Love -because it's been getting such rave reviews).
I agree, at the very least, he really should have used less electronic sounding instruments to fit with a 1968 recording.
Yes you do! Lumpy money has the orchestral version and the remixed 1984 version with 80's drums and bass. You need the original 1968 mix on the 2012 reissue.
Absolutely Free. Zappa's music was never commercial but it was (almost) always approachable. The number catchy tunes he composed is astonishing.....
Lately I have been listening to Uncle Meat. For some reason it always seemed to me like a step down in sonic quality from the preceding albums, Ruben & The Jets and Money, but in terms of songs/musicianship it is great. Dog Breath in the Year of the Plague has an amazing rocking beat to it, especially with the sax. The first version of this I heard (like many Zappa albums) was the 1987 Ryko remix. Still to this day it is hard for me to listen to a lot of the funny songs on this album and not picture them being sung by puppets or cartoon characters.
Sinister footwear rules! "Sinister Footwear II" on "them or us"and "Theme from the 3rd Movement of Sinister Footwear" on "you are what you is" . The Berkeley performance of the orchestral version on "Apocrypha", and ofcourse "persona non grata" which started the concert on 1978-10-27 Palladium , New York

My headphone jack was screwed up big time on my iPhone-wouldn't go in all the way-total loss of bass...Zoot Allures still sounded full and rich.
Been digging his live shows that bookend 1976. OZ and Philly. What a a great variety on display. That year he really got creative with his set lists. Also his guitar tone on OZ is amazing.
