Going to pick up the 2CD deluxe set, streaming the whole set on Spotify and there is just so much that I won’t listen to again. Dig the bonus tracks at the end of disc 1, and the monitor mixes are cool for disc 2, but all those other versions don’t interest me very much. I still have to order the boxset for Slide It In.
So after my box not being sent by Warner Australia on release day I emailed them and got this response today... We are waiting on these to come into the warehouse from the U.S., but unfortunately don't have an ETA on when they will arrive. Needless to say I've asked for a full refund and am ordering from Utopia in Sydney who've had it since Friday - pretty hopeless of Warners.
The monitor mixes on this case are pretty decent. The really highlight how good Coverdales voice was at the time, whilst providing very strong unpolished versions of the songs.
Strangely, my box is being shipped from Amazon US, already delayed, I haven’t been charged for it, nor received a shipping confirmation e-mail from Amazon, but it shows it “due by 8pm tonight”.
I would certainly and gladly welcome all of those ideas. That may be true, but then so would have all of the other Whitesnake masters that these current sets are being made from, too, so there's that to consider. Seeing as how Coverdale had different label deals with different countries, I'm not quite sure who would have been in possession of the actual masters. It's quite likely that it is/was Coverdale, himself.
Yeah, I'm glad the regular album version was more restrained, but it's fun to hear Vai going all out. Always kinda bugged me though that he threw in all that extra guitar, but didn't bother to do a new solo in the middle.
You sum up my feelings towards the album perfectly too! I bought the album back in the day having loved Vai’s work to date and the 1987 album was both ubiquitous and damned good. SOTT scratched neither itch will Vai’s singular guitar playing sitting like oil atop the water of the underlying Whitesnake album. I enjoyed their 1990 Donington date, as much for Vai’s solo slot as for Whitesnake headlining. I’ve not really revisited SOTT over the year as much as I have 1987 and Vai’s Zappa/Solo/Alcatrazz/DLR albums. With the current box set though I’ve warmed far more to the album, going back and listening to it with new ears. And, so help me, it holds up way better than many of the genres albums from 1989. This and Crue’s Dr. Feelgood represented the last viable albums of the genre. Barring GnR’s UYI albums in 1991, and that band were on a different level of successful, most band’s of Whitesnake’s genre calibre struggled after 1990. I can listen to say Hysteria and feel nothing but warm nostalgia whereas the follow up album sounds forced and its sentiments embarrassing. Was it grunge? My own widening music taste? The whole ‘hair metal’ genre having run its natural course? My own ageing? Who knows. I’ve been listening to the new box set via Apple Music and have been mightily impressed, as I was with 1987 before it. Off of the back of this thread I’ve also been listening to the Starkers SDE set this morning and I love it! It’s giving Kiss’ utterly wonderful Unplugged album a run for its money. This forum continues to cost me an awful lot of money. I may be forced, forced I tell you, to make purchases now.
Well one discovery for me is enjoying Sweet Lady Luck for the first time...I mean, I've owned it since the Greatest Hits disc in '94 but never got into it. It's a really good tune!
I was listening to the Donnington show last night.....starts off okay and then goes a bit downhill doesn't it?? I have still to play the last 3 songs, but Coverdale sounds burned by the time it gets to Is This Love? I mean not surprising when you look at the number of tour dates, however no wonder he put the band on hiatus.
You know I’m not a fan of the Donnington show, but I saw them on this tour in Montreal, and they were fantastic. I mean seeing Tommy Aldridge up close, and especially Steve Vai, that was one show I’ll always remember. They seemed to be tighter at the Montreal show.
Ya I was at this show, video isn’t the best but the audio gives you an idea what we experienced that night. Crowd was insane and Coverdale’s vocals were top notch...
I was at the Donnington show and remember the first few lines being very dodgy vocally, as though Coverdale had decided that it needed a new approach and frankly not one that I welcomed. Vai was phenomenal on the day but again didn’t seem to fit, as an ole Snakes fan and veteran of the early tours I preferred fat blokes with dodgy porn moustaches rather than lithe young sessioners.
I'm a little thrown by the Evolutions disc...I seem to recall the previous discs having like 3 demos fused together. This seems to have 3-6 (or more!) versions of songs. Also hard to tell who is on what, but I'm pretty sure we are hearing Vandenberg on some of this. The Deeper The Love especially seemed more his style. Also has some snippets of studio talk-back and interviews. Certainly a LOT to absorb...and fascinating to hear.
So the wagging tongues edition is the same version musically as the main album, correct? Only the interviews are new? Who is playing guitar on the Evolutions versions?
My amazon.ca order for the box set had an expected delivery date of Oct 10-17, it has been changed to Oct 17 on my order update. Perhaps the box sets will be shipped out within a weeks time...
Ordered the 2CD set today and listening to the monitor mixes on streaming. I don’t miss the keyboard frills at all. It’s a fun listen.
Same here....ridiculous. If I knew of another place that has it in stock, I would cancel the Amazon order.
I enjoyed the monitor mixes a lot as well. Definitely the highlight of the set so far. ..still to try evolutions though
Actually I have to say, I’ve gone through the Evolutions stuff twice on Spotify and it’s actually grown on me. I think I’d listen to the monitor mixes more often, so I’m glad I got the 2CD set, but the Evolutions stuff is pretty damn cool.
i just listened to judgement day off the evolution disk on youtube. it is an interesting approach to presenting different demos takes remixed on one track. I have to say i like it. What a great song!
bummer bro... Im not on here much anymore. I saw on SM that this was being released...a day before. It was late at night. I wasn’t sure whether to order or wait and call my local Indie in the morning. As the night wore on & into the next day - Amazon date kept getting moved out a day. It was $63 - I called the record store & they held the last copy on sale for $69.99 (they sold 5/6 on release day) - so I bought it in store.
