    He considered the studio his main instrument. His synth playing with Roxy was just as often processing other sounds than making it's own noise. He would be something akin to an on-stage recording engineer/producer.

    Yeah but can I remind you of all of his solo albums. If you're categorizing him as more of a producer ( musician behind the musicians ), I can understand but also what a brilliant solo career - Here Come the Warm Jets, Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy, Another Green World and Before and After Science are wonderful...although it is still a challenge to listen to his ambient music ie Music for Airports or No Pussyfooting with Fripper...
