  1. The Allman Brothers Band - before At The Fillmore made them a household name, they were well known among musicians and considered a "musician's band".

I'm not the hugest fan by any means but I think it would be remiss not to include the Toto guys in this thread. They take a lot of flack by many but they're all superb players and they played on a boatload of successful and/or great albums by a multitude of other artists.

I find it interesting some of the names I've seen mentioned. I won't bring up specific examples. to me, a musician's musician is someone who can step into any situation and make it sound like they've been doing their whole life. just because someone is a good songwriter or your favorite band doesn't always qualify them for this.

No, she is a singer songwriter. I can't think of an occasion where she contributed solely as an instrumentalist to anything.

That's not the entire point, though. Her chops on fretted instruments are/were well respected by many fellow artists.

Steve Stevens jumps to mind. He played for Michael Jackson and Billy Idol. Highly skilled guitar player. His solo work never did anything but among stars he is well known and respected. And quite rightly so.

Got a quote where someone praises her chops as an instrumentalist? She makes interesting use of open tunings and occasionally goes so far as some competent fingerpicking. As singer songwriters go, I'd say she's well below James Taylor or Paul Simon as a guitarist, and I would not list them either.

read the whole thing if you get a chance. below is just an excerpt.

    http://jazztimes.com/articles/19204-herbie-hancock-and-joni-mitchell-music-lyrics

If Mitchell seems charmed that Hancock thinks of her as a musician first and as a lyricist second, he seems equally charmed that she doesn’t care whether he sticks to the jazz tradition or not. They have wound up side by side in the no man’s land between jazz and modern pop, even though they arrived from vastly different starting points.

I am a guy with a complete Joni Mitchell collection and a huge admirer of her work as a singer, writer and arranger, who has not heard any evidence of her doing anything more on an instrument than accompanying herself and putting her own song across effectively. And I wouldn't consider Christy Hynde one of "the real greats" on guitar either, though it would be interesting to know which of those real greats have sought her out to play guitar on their records, with her being a "musician's musician"

Don't have time for much more than to quote the Dude and say, "well, that's just, like, your opinion, man."

Chrissie Hynde is in the rock and roll hall of fame, so I think she's earned her opinion. As certainly have jazz guys like Hancock and Shorter.

Todd Rundgren - played everything on 3/4 of Something/Anything. Guitarist extraordinaire. Great vocalist. Studio whiz.

Now, Andy Partridge said he had the personality of a dalek. But I think TR is probably just a guy who wants to get things done, and done right.

In my alternate reality fantasy, The Who would have hired Watt instead of Pino Palladino after Entwistle died. It would have been *different*, that's for sure.

I don't know that Watt is even a musician's musician. Yes, he's played with people ranging from J Mascis to Kelly Clarkson. But he's still kind of his own brand of punk bass player. He's evolved into someone who has great chops and feel, after 30+ of playing and touring every year. He's just so *Watt* that I can't see him just jumping into any old thing.
