Having worn out my CD of Hand. Cannot. Erase by Steven Wilson over the last several weeks, I landed on Derek and the Dominos this week. I started listening to In Concert and then moved on to Fillmore Double Night. Now I am listening to different copies of Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs including the MFSL CD, original 2 CD version, and the double vinyl album. I'll probably end up listening to the 2 CD deluxe edition this weekend.
Algiers - Algiers (2015) An incredible debut - a heavy mix of protest songs shot through gospel samples, 70s soul, primitive industrial and noise. Breathtaking. From wikipedia: Algiers is an American experimental band formed in Atlanta, Georgia. The band is composed of vocalist/guitarist Franklin James Fisher, bassist Ryan Mahan and guitarist Lee Tesche. The band's self-titled debut album will be coming out through Matador on June 2, 2015. In 2015, ahead of their eponymous release, the band opened for Interpol, during their North American Tour. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpLMc6nWtJw
New Orleans trumpet player Irvin Mayfield! He has a new series of live performances from a week at his Bourbon Street club, "Irvin Mayfield Jazz Playhouse." Also lots of music with a Caribbean influence with "Los Hombres Calientes."
I've really been getting into Elvis Presley the last month or so. I already had some of his music but over the last 6 weeks or so I've managed to pick up a lot great stuff so that I have a nice EP collection. My latest purchase was the Super Deluxe That's The Way It Is set. I really like this set, I thought it would get repetitive but each show has it's own charm. Also am reading Careless Love on my Paperwhite, really good book, really wraps you up in EP's world. It is sad though, even though I know how the story ends I keep hoping Elvis get things back on track, and in moments like the Comeback Special and Opening Night in Vegas I actually think to myself good, he's on the right path, things are going to get better. Then I remember that this story isn't fiction and I know the ending... One question, on the song Blue Moon from the YMWTBB set and 56 Elvis Presley album, is that Elvis singing the falsetto? It sounds like it is, but I've never heard him sing that high on any other songs. If it is him its a shame he didn't feature his falsetto a bit more.
My two most recent obsessions are Squeeze & Talking Heads. So good! (Why I waited this long to really get into them baffles me...) Just yesterday, I got my first Linus Of Hollywood CD -- Your Favorite Record -- and it's pretty amazing power pop. (Anybody have a recommendation for my next Linus purchase?) --Tom
I do this too, either when discovering a new artist, or when revisiting an old favourite, like recently when I happened to dig up an old Alice Cooper album-by-album thread here, and went through it listening to the whole catalogue, then found a download for the the earliest book on A.C. and read that, and finally started hunting down rare concert clips that I hadn't seen before, spent a couple of weeks like that. Right now I'm in between "obsessions", so we'll see what triggers the next...
For the past few months, I can't get through a day without listening to: Robert Plant (up to and including Fate of Nations) Queensryche Heart
I've been revisiting The Sweet catalog for the last few days. Pretty much have everything they ever recorded. What a great underrated hard rock band.
I've been obsessed with the rolling stones, bob marley, aerosmith, jeff beck, tommy bolin, santana, jimi hendrix, the doors, led zeppelin, yes, david bowie...thank lord I'm not into drugs
