I would say the first solo album by Domenic Troiano is very much in the style of Steely Dan. Amazing album! He was the lead guitarist for a time in each of the James Gang and the Guess Who.
The High Llamas' (very deliberate, according to singer/songwriter Sean O'Hagan) Steely Dan homage, "Checking In, Checking Out":
Some of Mark Knopfler's solo material reminds me of Steely Dan- "Postcards From Paraguay", for example. I could hear Donald Fagen singing that. Fagen-esque lyrics, too. That song somewhat resembles the SD tune "With A Gun", lol. RLJ is a big Steely Dan fan. She mentioned once that she found Donald Fagen's singing to be "really soulful." She covered "Showbiz Kids" on one of her records of covers, too.
I said it upthread but just in case Monkey House I've heard it said that there just another SD knockoff. That may be true, but isn't that the point of this thread?
Some of the solo work from Azita has drawn comparisons to Steely Dan. Here's a great song off her excellent second album—
Thin Lizzy is the closest I can think of because I mistook one of their songs for an early Steely Dan song
State Cows is a bit like Steely Dan. I only discovered them through Jay Graydon. His assistant is the mom of one of the guys in this Sweedish Band. I'd say this is more along the lines of Yacht Rock at times.
Monkey House was mentioned twice above. I “liked” the post, but mention them on my own because I have listened many of the suggestions above and none come closer to Steely Dan. And they are darn good!
The debut is a good record, and it has not only Katz but the same studio musicians (Porcaro, Randall, Rainey) and even Fagen himself on one synth solo. Oddly, though, it doesn't sound that much like SD to me. Vaguely like some songs from the Gaucho/Nightfly era.
Steeleye Span’s name sounds a bit like Steely Dan, as observed by comedian Harry Hill in the 90s. Listen to this, it’ll blow your socks off:
Me neither. Just the "Moonlight Seems Right" track. Vague topic. Vague response to said topic. I stand by Gino Vannelli and Ian Dury The Blockheads. I'll add The Blue Nile and Lyle Lovett.
Yep. And a lot of the same musicians played on her earlier records thru the 80s and theirs - including Fagen on a track or two, IIRC. And a guy named Roger Nichols engineered one or two as well, I think...
