DESMOND DEKKER AND THE ACES: "Isrealites"

One of the few reggae songs to hit big in the US; great record, great bass, but it's the lyrics that still make me laugh to this day:

"Get up in the morning slaving for bread, Sir,
So that every mouth can be fed,
    Poor, poor me-Israelite...uh

Get up in the morning slaving for bread Sir,
So that every mouth can be fed,
    Poor, poor me-Isrealite

My wife an' ma kids dem pack up an'a leave me,
Darling, she said "I was yours to be seen,"
    Poor, poor me-Israelite

    Shirt dem a tear-up trouser a go,
I don't want to end up like Bonnie and Clyde,
    Poor, poor me-Israelite

After a storm there must be a calm,
You catch me in your farm, you sound your alarm,
    Poor, poor me-Israelite

Get up in the morning slaving for bread, Sir,
So that every mouth can be fed,
    Poor, poor me-Isrealite...Oooohhhhh,
    Poor, a-poor, a-poor, a-poor, me-Isrealite...."

Makes absolutely no sense, but then it didn't have to. What a groove!

    Hi Ed,

For the Rastafarian's, who believe that they are direct descendants of the Israelites, this song is depiction of daily life for a poor worker in Jamaica. In this light, the lyrics make sense.

    Great groove!

    Bob:)

Yeah, but in 1969, I couldn't make out most of them...it wasn't until I saw THE HARDER THEY COME in a theater back in '73 that I could begin to hear the english through the jamaican patois....and I thought "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" and "Immigrant Song" were near-indecipherable!

"Isrealites" is a great record, though. One of these days I have to ask the Tonmeister how that one missed the VINTAGE MUSIC series, as it was MCA-licensed(at least at the time--it turned up a few years later in glorious wide stereo on a promo CD titled UNI THEN).

    Ed,

Yep! In 1969, I had no clue about all this either. In the Reggae light, another Bass buster...

Double Barrel - Dave & Ansil Collins

Now, were talkin' big bass and echo here!

    Bob:)

"Double Barrel" is another classic...kind of like what James Brown would sound like if he were born and bred in Jamaica....a wild recording, bass that will rip into your guts, and, in the great reggae tradition, more than a little, 'em....eccentric. That playful piano line throughout adds just the right topping. Curiously, while much of Dekker's early work is available in stereo--if rarely reissued nowadays that way--this single has no stereo master I've ever found.

Dave and Ansel Collins, if I remember correctly. I have the 45. Can anyone translate the rant at the beginning? "I am beshuggahva.....I am WOOO!"

    Not Guilty-The Beatles

All I remember is "I......Am The MAGNIFICENT...." After that, I'd have to give it a listen, but right now BOOKENDS[MFSL]is playing, and hard to follow "At The Zoo" with "Double Barrel," somehow....:D

Speaking of S&G...on this CD, "Save The Life Of My Child" has more bass work going on than the rest of the album combined, I think....had MFSL made discs of this high caliber on a regular basis, I might have bought more of them....

Okay, Evan, here ya go, the intro to "Double Barrel"(I won't decipher the rest, for now--pretty easy--it's the intro that's a bitch):

    "I.....am the Magnificent....
I'm back by the shack of a soul boss most turnin', stormin',
    sound o'soul!
    I am double-U O, O, O, mmmmm?"

    WORK, WORK, WORK, WORK.....

    So now you know...:)
