A year or so ago, I found myself getting drawn into what’s become one of my favorite genres: the grim, cold Scandinavian crime drama (aka “Nordic Noir”). There are quite a few I’ve found entertaining: Trapped, The Killing, Bordertown, Occupied, Deadwind, The Woods, etc. The language may not be Nordic, but shows like The Forest and The Missing seem to occupy that genre as well... So what are some of your favorite examples in this vein? What do you recommend? And, for a laugh, here’s a brief (but pretty accurate spoof of the genre): NOTE: if there’s a better thread for this already m let me know, and I’ll have this one closed. I did a couple searches, but nothing jumped out at me.
I've watched Bordertown and Deadwind. Both were excellent, especially the former. I'll have to check out the others on your list. I'd add in Case and The Valhalla Murders. Wallander (UK) is also highly recommended although I don't that it fully meets the criteria of Nordic Noir. The Break is another I'd recommend (Belgian/French).
I’d intended to mention Valhalla Murders! And you can always opt for the original Swedish Wallander. I’ll try Case this winter... Thanks! Been meaning to watch The Bridge. I’ll make note of the other, as well.
It is truly wonderful and got better with every series. The characters are wonderful especially Saga Norén played by Sofia Helin, as is the way their relationships progress across the 4 series. Another worth watching is “The Killing” The Killing (Danish TV series) - Wikipedia Like you, I find them much the best dramas on TV.
It's Iceland, so it qualifies, same as Valhalla Murders. We stayed in the pub where Fortitude was filmed when we did our round trip of Iceland a few years ago, and when we stayed in Reykjavik we stayed in the hotel overlooking where the first murder in Valhalla Murders took place Can't beat a bit of Nordic Noir. Thank you BBC4 Saturday nights!
