Still a bit confused as there are Japanese pressings with and with out black rings on the disc.

This is a very difficult title to figure out as far as versions and mastering's go.

I believe the CD must be at least over 43:20 to be Steve Hoffman's mastering.

    (corrections welcome)

Do you have a definitive way to identify one ? It seems to match with the one found in the above "Who's Next" - Do We Have A Winner? thread, but how to be sure ?

Any early US MCA CD version of Who's Next that has a disc length of ~43:25 (give or take a second, or two) was mastered by Steve Hoffman. Any CD version with a different disc length was not mastered by Steve Hoffman.

Nothing else matters (bar code, matrix, ring configuration, Japanese or US manufacturing origin, phase of the moon, etc.).

The time that I listed was calculated by the times listed on the face of the CD, not by actually scanning the CD which I do not have as of yet. Are the times printed on the CD an accurate determination or do I actually need to read the CD as things in print may differ a bit from what's actually on the disc ?

The printed time means nothing - you would need to rip it digitally and add the times that way.

If you have Audacity, take the WAV files, load them all into one project, and use the Time Shift Tool (F5) and slide each one to the end of the previous one. Then select everything (Ctrl+A). This will tell you the total run time.

I will have to wait for it to arrive then, as I just purchased this today. I will rip the CD and see what I got. Thanks All for the info.

No need to rip or add anything, actually. Just pop it in a CD player and look at the display for the total disc length (I agree with the poster who suggested any printed track times are irrelevant).

    Good luck!

In my experience, many CD players don't display this. Or maybe I've just been unlucky with CD players. At any rate, if it is the desired version, you'd probably want a WAV backup anyway!

I suppose though the Audacity thing is irrelevant as I think you can just select all the files and they'll tell you the total length. I'm just so used to doing everything in Audacity!

I can confirm that my Canadian pressing of the Hoffman mastering is indeed 43:24.

My disc arrived and has a total playing time of 43:13. It would appear that this is not A Steve Hoffman mastered disc. Oh Well.

    kevin5brown Analog or bust.

The Canadian CD is *not* the Steve Hoffman mastering that's on the US CD. The Canadian CD has been tweaked, with boosted lows and rolled off highs:
