To be fair, Dave Matthews Band is musically and lyrically miles above Nickelback and Hootie. I don't really understand the hate for them; I think it's just people jumping on a bandwagon who haven't actually listened to the band.

    1) Not really.
    2) Pop appeals to the casuals, rock to the hardcore fans. It's a lot easier for T. Swift to get a huge market share than a band playing blackened progressive stoner doom.

I Like DMB a lot. They have never any more than a cult band over here so overkill hasn't been an issue. With Hootie & Nickelback, I have one album by each of them and they're both decent. Neither are particular favourites but I can see why they've both appealed to a lot of people.

Ask people who don't listen to rock. The most common answers: It's boring, it all sounds the same, and says nothing to me about my life. It's just not relatable to most non-seniors.

I'm sure my dad felt the same way about western swing. Why did it have to go away?

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think that was the issue--they were bands that explicitly appealed to the common denominator by writing very catchy and relatable, but super-basic songs. If you're a dark angsty art-school wannabe type (AKA me in middle school through college), you would of course hate these bands. And music critics/music superfans generally tend to be dark angsty art-school (wannabe) types.

but those artsy bands generally never dominated the mainstream...it was always the MOR rock bands that had catchy songs accessible to the public..
so I don't see that as a change at all.

I think new sound of electro dance when Lady Gaga came was interesting. And the whole post-grunge was kind of oversaturated, even American idol contestants were releasing that type of sound, for example Chris Daughtry, Dave Cook all sounded similar to 3 Doors Down, Lifehouse, Nickelback etc

When I hear the word rock, I don't think black prog stoner doom. I think mainstream, commercial rock.

Maybe you need to refine your parameters. The "black prog stoner doom" genre is white hot right now.

    It always smelled funny.

..at least that's what my mom used to say when she'd poke her head in my room to tell me to turn the volume down

When we find out why today's teenage boys are obsessed with tik-tok then maybe we can figure out why they hate rock music too.

Mainstream is for people who do not really care for music, isn't it? Safe sounds for supermarkets, hotel lobbies and elevators.
