One can hardly picture The Band going in any of those directions. They didn’t need to.

    I agree.

Looking back, though, the Stones did try all three.

My bad - they would played "My Sweet Lord" and "Something" with George. He would went on before the Dylan segment...and would have played ukelele on "I Shall Be Released".

George was probably saving his "crashing the party" moment for the Deep Purple reunion.

Yes, George couldn't wait for the fun that went on backstage with the Deep Purple gang:

There were intimations of both styles before they came into existence. Those with their ears to the ground could pick it up. The Band couldn't. I'm not sure they wanted to.

Haven’t listened to this but interestingly Levon does a disco high hat on the second part of the verses on Wheel on Rock Of Ages.

    Good topic,

Good Topic, they are 2 questions:
Why did George Harrison NOT ATTEND the Last Waltz?
& Why did George Harrison DID NOT PERFORM at the Last Waltz?

First, don't know why after all these decades people, book writers, internet radio shows, etc. haven't can't ask Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Robbie Robertson, Olivia Harrison, Martin Scorsese, etc. this "topic"??

(to clarify past post) regarding (Last Waltz) Warners Bros. : George Harrison Dark Horse Record Label was part of the WEA (Warner Bros.) Inc. Org.
time frame of Saturday Night Live & Last Waltz : George could have stayed a few days more either East Or West coast & take a plane to L.A. to "attend" the Last Waltz" the reason is why no show??
Again someone will have to ask Olivia, the mentioned above that question, (If her memory serves her well)
From what I gather: George @ that time had to stay away from the LA drug cocaine scene which he was part of in the years before the Last Waltz, going out to Hollywood with his Dark Horse label ordeals & heavy partying! It's was time for George to stay away from that scene (like Dylan staying in Woodstock
getting away from it all after 7/'66).
    speculation:
Possibly being with Eric & Pattie in'76 would have been awkward!
Didn't Ringo & George have a falling out / lawsuit? at that time regarding George's tune"I'll Still Love You (Every Song is Song) the agreement of how the recording was to be done by Ringo, George was pissed
The Band & George Harrison had equal musical admiration for one another. If George wanted to perform with The Band, they could have pulled out any Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Everly Brothers, Carl Perkins numbers to jam . Even pull out & go over To Kingdom Come in '76 or film Sunshine Life For Me
like Last Waltz video of Emmylou Harris, Staple Singers Last Waltz tracks.
Someone ask Olivia, Eric, Ringo, Bob, Marty etc this great topic question & get it finalized! (Instead of decades of stupid questions)
In the meantime, I hear George singing "I Don't Want to Do It" & "The Nazz can't make that jazz, rideo, video"!
