The first one was fun, so why not have our favorite monster hunter return? would Hugh Jackman be willing to return if a good script is there?

  5. Can’t say I needed a sequel, but the answer is usually that they don’t believe they will Make a profit.

On a $160m budget, so that's the answer to the OP: it didn't make a profit.

Clearly Uni expected more $$$ than they got. "Van Helsing" needed somewhere around $400m-$480m to make a profit, and it didn't come close...

I can say this about Van Helsing, they must've gotten the C squad at Industrial Light and Magic, as the digital creature effects are some of the worst this side of the Scorpion King from The Mummy Returns (well, the little pigmy things were terrible too). Honestly, the effects in nearly all the Stephen Sommers movies are terrible (the three Mummy movies and Van Helsing especially). I couldn't believe it was actually ILM when I looked it up as they are that bad IMO.

You saw the first one, right?

And you still need to ask?

The movie cost about $170M (including a bunch of reshoots, some of which I saw over at ILM), and "only" made $300M. I think it was expected to make closer to $500M, so in that respect, it was a disappointment. I think they anticipated a lot of sequels with Hugh Jackman eventually running into a bunch of the classic rebooted Universal monsters. The mostly-bad reviews from critics didn't help.

It’s not a bad movie. It is what it is - entertainment. I keep confusing this one with the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen due to their casting literary characters, i.e., Invisible Man, Mr. Hyde, Dorian Gray(a first!) as super villains.

Wasn’t the first one bad enough?

Ugh... League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was such a letdown after reading the comic.

They really really dropped the ball on that one.

  20. The effects in the first Mummy film Sommers did were pretty good.

  21. No, it’s a bad movie so is League.

Let's agree to disagree :D. They are definitely better than The Mummy returns, but I still feel they are sub par. For example, the Star Wars prequels, which were made around the same time frame, were much better.

I still can't believe that League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen will go down in history as Sean Connery's final film.

I watched this last night. It’s not great but it’s not terrible. Could have been much better I think incorporating all the different characters. Connery was good I think. The whole Nemo and the size of the sub thing was a bit much.

  25. They were also working with about $40 million less in budget & it’s also more difficult to make effects involving humans much more difficult to make them look convincing. Go back and watch both back-to-back and you’ll notice the difference. If anything, I find the effects in Phantom Menace to look more cartoony.
