I pre-ordered this new "Real Gone Music" release and was lucky to receive it today on it's official release date. I just want to mention that this may be the best "sounding" CD I've ever heard. All the original mono single mixes in glorious punchy mono-riffic sound! And it has incredible dynamic range! Mastered by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision. Of course, it's all about Wicked Pickett here! By the time you get to his third single, "In The Midnight Hour", it's full on masterful soul music. Every track here is brilliant and sounds even much better than the "Funky Midnight Mover" set. It's like you never heard Wilson before. Simply stunning. I don't have to say anymore but if you're a fan of the Wicked Pickett, pick this up and let it blow your ears and mind away! Bravo Real Gone Music!

Is the 6CD Wilson Pickett on Atlantic all stereo? Are any of the mono singles actually alternate recordings, instead of simply mono mixes of the same album track recordings?

Cases are specially molded of unobtainium with crunchy dead frog liners!

However the music is simply dead genius soul. Maybe some of the greatest singles ever recorded. So that has to be considered in evaluating the packaging of course.

Thanks for the snark. Just trying to figure out whether I can order it from Ama, or whether I need to track it down locally. I don't trust Ama to get it to me undamaged.

OK, Amazon, online retailer of books, movies, music and games along with electronics, toys, apparel, sports, tools, groceries and general home and garden items. Is that better?

For anyone who has both this new CD and the A Man and a Half comp from the early '90s...

...how do they compare sonically? Thanks.

And a follow-up in case the new one sounds significantly better: How likely is it that there actually will be a second volume?

They say they're planning on three volumes, but as seems to often be the case, it could depend on how the first volume sells.

Thanks. I think I'll wait to see if the second volume is released before getting this one. The third volume I'm not so worried about.

I agree there's an improvement in sound quality of the new Wilson Pickett Singles vol 1.
Less harsh, you can increase the volume of the new set over the Midnight Mover collection.
I'll have to listen to my mono vinyl Wickett Pickett in the near future for a complete "experience".

Rather than start another thread (although, I'm probably too lowly a poster to so anyway), I thought I'd ask - Has anyone picked up the new 10 disc box set of Atlantic albums box set (came out last week). First 5 albums are in mono (although I'm In Love has Stereo written on it - probably laziness for the packaging on Rhino's part caused that little error). It was only £23.99 on base.com - so really a steal - apparently 2007 remaster, so not sure if they match the Funky Midnight Mover box set, I don't have that set. The mastering seems pretty hot to me, but it suits the music so not something that bothers me much, especially for the price.
    Anyone got it, any thoughts?

Sorry can't directly address your concern about the new 10 cd ( I have Funky Midnight box but not the 10 CD set ).
However if you don't have the Wicked Pickett, Sound of, Midnight Mover albums in some form,
then you have to get this.
I'm currently reading this biography ( In the Midnight Hour by Tony Fletcher )
which is a great read. Highly recommended.
Also love your handle ( Sammy Davis Jr was Mom's favorite performer )

I saw that Funky Midnight Mover is still available. It has singles like Miniskirt Minnie that won't be
on the 10 CD box. Also his early "pre-Atlantic" material is on the Funky Midnight Mover with songs
like Peace Breaker, My Heart Belongs to You, If You Need Me, etc. Good stuff.

I should probably have made it more clear, got this new set - which has all the albums from In The Midnight Hour through to Don't Knock My Love - so I've got all the main stuff you mentioned now (not the rarer stuff, however); I was just checking to find out if the sound was on a par (or possibly the same - seeing as how this says 2007 remaster, so perhaps it's the same mastering as Funky Midnight Mover) as the Funky Midnight Mover set.
Also, just giving others a heads up on getting the albums cheap.

I'm still waiting for Vol.2. Volume 1 was a revelatory listen for me.

I think they would have sold way more copies of ALL of the volumes if they had issued them ALL at once. This looks like a dead effort. Not smart business in my mind. Reminds me of the James Brown Singles series. By the time they issued the later volumes, the early volumes were out of print and going for extremely high prices, so far fewer people started on the series at all

Digging up this post as I finally got around to comparing these two a bit more in depth. They are both great, each with very nice mastering. For the similar cuts, in the end I think Vol 1. is a better tape transfer I guess is how I would describe it; I think a bit more information or accuracy of the tape is coming through, it is a little tighter and fuller range presentation; lots more reverb/production qualities shine through for me at least-- but again to me seemingly better latter-day tech or technique rather than a bunch of mastering move differences. A Man And A Half is maybe a little more relaxed and rounded off maybe, but to me not quite as much visibility on certain things-- I do especially love the lil' thicker/thumpier kick drum on it though. These differences are rather small I suppose especially when accounting for volume differences, and very much a matter of taste, so in the end both great on the sound front.
