Woody Allen sues Amazon for $68 million

what's going on here? I'd guess its partially Metoo, maybe Amazon looking for a way out of a deal they see as no longer beneficial interms of prestige or finances . $68Million seems ambitious.

Not a surprise move. Subversive vs. subversive.

A contract's a contract, Amazon will pay up some amount. No matter whether one believes the allegations or not, it is as Allen stated a many years old issue that was investigated thoroughly at the time by the authorities. Amazon had already done a series with Allen followed by this now shelved feature. They're now making a business decision based on the current climate, and very much by the subject matter of the film, which given Allen's history it's a shock that they financed. But that said, Allen has always had complete artistic freedom in his contract provided he brings in his films on budget which he does. The actors who have now donated their salaries also knew well the allegations against Allen before agreeing to be in the film, this is now just a case of covering themselves, not some brave moral decision.

If it's in ink, they owe him. It's their business decision to get cold feet, not his. Break a deal, face the wheel, Amazon.

You would think Amazon might have noticed that NBC recently had to pay out Megyn Kelly her full $69 million dollar contract after firing her over her Halloween black-face costume comments; a contract's a contract.

amazing how something like that with no charges ever filed, can ruin a career that's gone back to the 50's

Depends on whats in the contract.
Sounds like Amazon owns his movies, and as such has the right to decide whether to broadcast or distribute it.

Woody wants the film to be seen, and his career to continue on.
Seems like the compromise is, Woody gets the rights to the film back, and Amazon gets out of the Allen contract.

I applaud them. Woody Allen is, by most accounts, a creepy pedophile. The fact that he has avoided charges doesn't mean a lot to me (Cosby avoided rape charges for decades).

not most accounts. its really Dylan Farrow's story from when she was seven, and the back story there with mia could makes it suspect, not saying he's guilty or not guilty but this is different than cosby

I think Amazon is using the allegations as a convenient reason. In reality, they know they deal they offered him was way to generous for what they got in return.
