Worst/Best/Overrated/Underrated Beatles songs/albums?

Overrated song - "Carnival of Light"...just on the basis that it's been elevated to this holy-grail status, with nobody really having a concrete idea of what it is. Obviously they didn't agree it was a big thing.

 

Songs:
Worst - Mr. Moonlight. I just can't come around to this one no matter how many times I listen. I like the organ though.
Best - Strawberry Fields. Great lyrics, music and production.
Overrated - Twist and Shout. Inevitably when the DJ played an "oldies" song at a school dance, it would be this. Got so sick of hearing it.
Underrated - Cry Baby Cry. Again, like SFF, a song with great words, music and well-produced. LOVE the piano in this. A truly unusual and kind of spooky Beatles number. Lennon's voice sounds melancholy and menacing at the same time, incredibly.

Albums:
Worst - Yellow Sub original. I'm not knocking the George Martin tunes, but they could have been put on their own LP. This should have been a double EP like MMT, or maybe half original and half a compilation with other songs featured in the movie (Eleanor Rigby, Nowhere Man, etc). Yellow Sub Songtrack fixed it. I do like the crazy White Album review on the British version, that guy gave an amazing review of the album.
Best - Revolver. Take the UK version, add the Paperback Writer/Rain single, and you pretty much have the best Beatles album ever made in my opinion.
Overrated - With The Beatles. I'm sorry, this is tough! Great album but it seems like The Fabs are still trying to find their voice on this. About half the songs are covers, and they sound alright, but they had some strong songwriting of their own by now.
Underrated - Beatles For Sale - In my perception this was was virtually unheard of (in the US) outside of record collector/Beatle nerd circles until the release of the CD in the 1980s. Wow, what a mind-blower! Mr. Moonlight is weak but this is more than made up for by the very strong original material (No Reply, Eight Days a Week, Baby's in Black). Some of their best covers, particularly Rock and Roll Music. I'll Follow the Sun showed the folkier, acoustic path they would travel with Help and Rubber Soul. Lennon's Dylan-esque efforts (i.e. I'm A Loser) were making the band stronger, in my opinion. McCartney's songwriting gets stronger here as well.

 

I don't know why everyone bags on "Mr. Moonlight". Obviously, it's not one of their masterpieces. But you could make a full-length album of Beatles songs that are worse.

 

Will it? I'm 34, I know oodles of examples of women (and men!) leaving a partner for another (that's even without cheating)

Not something I would like to sing, mind. Not a nice concept!

Worst - A Hard Day's Night (Yellow Submarine has two of the worst Beatles songs on it, but the soundtrack and everything else is still phenomenal. Close second, though.)
Best - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (I've listened to it too many times for me to really enjoy it anymore, although I'm sure that will come back, but I still maintain that this is the best of the best.)
Overrated - A Hard Day's Night (I was going to say Revolver, but I actually do understand why people like it so much. At one point I did too for AHDN, but not anymore.)
Underrated - Beatles For Sale (I think it's more that I used to hate this album and therefore didn't listen to it much that I like it now because it sounds way fresher than the rest.)

Worst (not counting cover songs): When I Get Home. Sounds almost like someone trying to do the Beatles thing but failing.

Best: I guess if I could only listen to one Beatle song over and over again, I'd pick Strawberry Fields Forever. But there are so many great songs!

Overrated: Old Brown Shoe. Clunky, never liked this one.

Underrated: Baby, You're A Rich Man. That bass line is killer.

 

I think Beatles for Sale is such an underrated album and is by far my favorite (however, Please Please Me is a close second!). I love every song on that album, though some of them are covers! I think it is a unique style for the Beatles, and brings them back to their 1950's rock 'n roll roots!

Worst: I know it’s sacrilege to some but I really can’t stand Penny Lane.

Best: Don’t let me down (ask me again in an hour and it’ll be something else : )


Overrated: Lucy in the sky (this go could in the worst section to be honest...terrible melody, cheesy lyrics, even Macca’s bass can’t save this one)

Underrated: Revolution number 9 (for a band as popular as The Beatles to knock this one out is pretty crazy - I don’t love it but you can’t deny their chutzpah)
