See, I kinda lean more toward the newer Risk cover. Not sure why. I do agree that neither were anything special. Lol

I don't know about 'worst' but the rotated coverart on the Expanded and Deluxe editions of Moondance emphasises the large image, totally changing the effect of the original cover:

Also, with the original artwork, the LP comes out of the top of Van's head but with the Deluxe Edition the wording at the top spoils that effect (the Expanded Edition also has the rotated artwork but the discs come out of the side so the effect is lost there too):

I hated the new covers for all three. Bought them, but still hated them. Couldn't understand why anyone would even suggest it, let alone do it. The stamp sheets that came with the early releases were kind of neat though, as the images weren't necessarily bad, they were just unnecessary as new covers.

Imagine if they did this with Elvis Presley covers based on how he looks now

It’s funny but I first experienced Station to Station on CD, and so in my mind the colour cover is the cover. It was only some time later I realised that it had originally come out in the black and white cover with the white border. So I’m still very fond of the full colour cover.

(And I quite like the updated I, Robot too. The background picture on the original does tend to date it a little bit.)

Back covers? I bought all the super deluxe boxes, and these are the covers to the bonus discs, completely separate from covers on the original albums. Were these the back covers on the standard releases?

They are the back covers to the 2CD deluxe editions.
The single disc remasters have the original back covers.

For the 30th anniversary re-issue of Ian Hunter's 'Schizophrenic' album, they inexplicably reversed the image.
Hand and glasses are on the right side instead of the left...

Was it an error that somebody missed? ...or did some punk millenial graphic designer just think he knew better?

More inexplicable is the fact that I owned the new version for two years before I noticed the difference. :p

Many years ago I was in the offices of Bowie's management Mainman, and saw framed on the wall , the color photo. Blew me away. That was supposed to be the cover of the record, but RCA cheaped out for some reason. Was glad to finally see it restored.

The concept is kinda neat I thought. But it makes one think they are re recorded version which they are not. Brave idea, terrible execution.

I genuine appreciate Phil’s lack of vanity - I like how he owns the aging process.

    But I prefer the original.

I'm a hardliner: with a reissue, any change, to either the cover or the sounds within, is artistically invalid and inappropriate.

Don't get me wrong, I totally dig the concept. But the execution could have been awesome (in my opinion) as I described with maintaining the original on the digipak and adding a slip sleeve with the "older" version.

Do these deserve mention in "worst special edition cover changes"? I think so. I don't loathe the covers and it certainly didn't prevent me from buying five of the seven albums for the first time. I just think they could have thought it through and made a good concept truly great and still maintained the familiarity of the original releases.
