The fee is $25, and it's the only way to buy and sell on that site. Audiokarma has some unhelpful, barely viewable Barterplace "preview" screen shots, so it's impossible to tell how many people are actively buying/selling.

I think so, especially for gear.

I saved enough on 1 piece of gear to pay for 4 years of subscribing.

I'm a member over there not a subscriber, but I'm not paying $25 just to take a peek at bartertown

I was a subscriber several years ago. I thought it was worth it and I have been meaning to resubscribe. I sold quite a large collection of Jazz CDs over there, probably 80% of them sold. Lots of cool gear offered too.

Is is common to see more modern gear like Pass Labs, First Watt, etc?

If you're actively in the market for '50s through '70s gear, then subscribing to AK's Bartertown is a no-brainer.

If you're just browsing or looking for more recent and/or high-dollar stuff, then I'd say it's more of a judgment call. I could be mistaken, but my impression is that if you're look for stuff like Pass/First Watt, you might find more selection at Audiogon than AK Bartertown.
