Even though cds and quality CD players (for reasonable money anyway) are on the decline I would love to see a Schiit Audio CD player.Would be interesting to see what they could come up with for say $1500-$2000.A simple cd top loader transport plus their excellent DAC technology.Anyone else who would like to see this or am I alone on this?

Yes I would like to see it. Not sure what you mean by top loader but I like a regular old drawer loading CD player. Don't care for the slot-loaders or the Rega top loading mechanism.

As much as I love my spinning silver disks, I think that they'd have to be out of their collective minds to consider doing that today. The market-share of spinning digital media has been declining to rapidly in recent years. Plus the capital costs required for all of tooling would probably never be recovered by the sales, unless they simply rebadged somebody else's player. But if they did that, then what would be the point?

Schiit has already mentioned in the past that this is something that they are working on. No mention of an expected release date though.

It's rumored on one website that it will be transport only.

    You are absolutely correct!

I read CD Player, but my brain switched it to Transport. Sorry about that.

Which makes sense--that way, they can sell you a DAC too.

    That would stand to reason.

And I'd line up to be one of their first customers, I dunno how much more time my late-1990s transport has left in it.

I wonder if you can hook it up to a computer through USB and rip discs with it?

Thing is, many of the Pre-amps have capable DACs now, I especially think of Parasound, great DACs, all you need is a transport. I have bought more CD's in the last year than since 1981, my gosh, find them and buy them, they are everywhere and so darn inexpensive, I love my CD's, can I get a second on that!!! I just paid the big bucks (relatively speaking) for the White Album and Abbey Road, as Apple could not offer the nice picture book with the LP's, what in the heck is going on there?? :goodie:

They would have to build the drive mechanism itself in order to have complete control over their product. Then, as you say, how many units are they going to actually sell.

With companies like Oppo bailing out, that should speak for itself.

Is anyone making a dedicated CD drive anymore? I hate how all these re-purposed video disc drives take forever to load and react.

TEAC/Tascam still have a few CD players in their product lineup, do they still make their own transports?

Transport only makes sense to me because everyone now has a dac making the cdp redundant. The transport is all most people need. And according to that Audiolab 6000cdt review, it is better.

What about Schiit’s other product offerings has you thinking they would make a $1500-2000 CD player? I would assume their offering would target a lower price range...

Except it's a slot loader. I dare you to put a rare and expensive CD like a holy grail "Dark Side Of The Moon" in a slot loader.

I won't do a slot loader. Too much risk of damaging the CD if something in the mechanism gets jammed. Yes I know the modern slot loaders use mechanisms that insert and eject the CD with arms that only contact the edge of the CD. But if things get jammed those arms can still scratch and damage the CD. They're not as bad as the old style slot loaders that used a conveyor belt mechanism that pulled the CD in with a conveyor belt that made contact with the play side of the CD. But those slot loaders are still an accident waiting to happen.

I won't do a slot loader with my CDs. If Schiit makes a CD player or transport and it uses a slot loading mechanism I'll say the same thing. I won't do it.

At least with top loaders you don’t have to worry about the drawer mechanism not working.

...which is their most expensive of four DACs, by a wide margin, and marketed to compete with DACs of substantially higher cost.

I agree with you. I never thought that drawer loading mechanisms were that good of an ideal.

I would rather have a quality made top loading player.
