I always loved the sound of the XRCD so I never even picked up the SACD. It sounds like it might be worth looking around for it again.

They don't really sound that different. Just less tape damage.

I have some of the Prestige DVD-As; wish I had bought more. I don't have this one, though. They're extremely rare at this point and hard to find. When I was in Japan in 2004 I got a few, and picked one or two up over the years. While I was there this year I didn't see any.

I have a couple of those DVD-Audio discs. Too expensive to buy the whole series. For a while, there was a Chinese seller on eBay that was selling them and I bid on the Blue Mitchell, MJQ and Red Garland discs but I was always outbid.

Which Garland album was a DVD-A?

Not sure if there were more, but Groovy was done. Its catalog number was VIAJ-60020.

Thanks for the info, StyxCollector. Lots of cool titles there. I didn't realize these DVD-As existed. I don't do multi-channel, but that hasn't stopped me from picking up a couple dozen DVD-As over the years.

Except for the Japanese artists, these are all mono or stereo DVD-As at 192/24. The ones I have sound pretty good. It'll be interesting to do a shootout of Saxophone Colossus when the new SACD comes out.

Which Saxophone Colossus SACD are you referring to? The APO has been out.

Does anyone know if 'Kelly Blue' was originally recorded in mono or stereo?

Kelly Blue was recorded a couple years after stereo was implemented...so not mono. The OJC SACD is my favorite version.

I like those a lot too. Actually, I think they are much better recordings than Kelly Blue to begin with.

Had the XRCD and didn't like it. Sounded like a dub with juiced up EQ. The version I like is the Japanese K2 remaster (in mini Lp CD packaging). Very smooth and warm. I haven't heard the SACD.

I really like the SACD and this is a classic album.

Thanks guys! I have the SACD, which sounds fantastic. It is one of my favorite SACDs. I also own a nice, original mono LP pressing, which I was able to score for only $12 from a seller online. I know Steve says a lot of the old jazz albums I like were originally recorded in stereo, but I think there is also something to be said for the mono pressings and their warm, boomy bass (and drums), even if the mono versions were essentially fold downs.
