Yeah, there's no question it's Nyacht, got it- the end of the song spells Big Band in big capital letters - like ispace was saying, sinking the ship entirely. The lights of the LP cover are of downtown LA. Frank Sinatra doesn't work for Yacht.

Oh yeah I love this album. It’s mostly soft rock but really high quality. This yacht ballad is probably my favorite track on the albums (along with the upbeat Too Good To Turn Back Now):

  4. I don’t care how it’s classified. If I like it, I like it. Air Supply though is crap.

No argument from me on that front. This pretty much sums up the Air Supply experience for me:

Some of you guys here may have heard of the most unwanted song. Back in 1997 a poll was created on what people liked and hated the most in music. The most unwanted song featured a rapping opera singer and a children's choir singing about Walmart. The most wanted on the other hand is the most generic adult contemporary song fathomable. It also happens to feature the guitarist of ****ing Living Colour.

Ah, summer is here, which means most of the music mags take their annual stab at a yacht rock article and playlist. The latest from Rolling Stone actually isn't half bad. It makes the usual mistakes ("The Pina Colada" song and Bertie Higgin's excruciatingly nyacht "Key Largo") but gets the basics right and gets points for dropping Archie James Cavanaugh into the mix. Read it here:

Thanks for posting. Alas, I had high hope for Mr. Wheaton, but looks like he compiled yet another list of random '70s soft rock. He did add a few good ones -- including the always delightful Marc Jordan -- but for the most part missed the boat. And for the love of god, what is the deal with 10cc's "I'm Not in Love"? I think that makes it on to 99.9 percent of Spotify yacht rock lists, and I still have no idea why.

So I was going though some of the late-era Heatwave albums and came across this yacht soul number, "Posin' Til Closin'" (how great is that title?) from 1980's (or '81's) Candles album.

While I wasn't expecting any, this album actually does have some yacht personnel, including Jerry Hey, Michael Boddicker and, of course, the omnipresent Paulinho Da Costa. There's also a writing credit from Ted Temperton.

Maybe not the best example of yacht out there, but the bounce cannot be denied:

    Hi LCG,

Just one more song. I have to ask you since I really liked it.

What are your thoughts on this song? Does it scream ALOHA, or is it something that could come out from California, with a Westcoast feel to it ('continental', not 'insular' West Coast)?

Oh heck yeah, that's got a great Westcoast vibe. The Hawaiians were really good at that; for such a small population, they put out a ton of killer Westcoast and yacht back in the day.

Looks like the Crosby/Fagan collaboration is out, and as I predicted, Fagan's cuisine reigns supreme -- this is like a new Dan track. I think this is all that's available at the moment, but if the rest is like this, there's reason for optimism:

Thought Rick Beato’s new video might be of interest to musicians here.

    More about the collaboration here:
Hear David Crosby’s New Donald Fagen-Penned Song ‘Rodriguez for a Night’

Dang - there are some Dan-like chord changes in there!

Also - this looks like it might be from the same sessions - featuring Michael McDonald!

    Cheers,
    Paul

London based Lou Hayter just released an album called 'Private Sunshine'. I'm impressed. It's obviously not a yacht-rock album, more a yacht-infected retro-disco lounge album. But she knows where to find the goods, as one of the songs is a cover of Steely Dan's 'Time out of Mind'.

Nice little groove they've got there, eh? Honestly, the chord changes are pretty yachty. Still don't think I'd put it on the boat, but it can stop by for a daiquiri dockside any time.

I have no further reason for optimism. The Mike McDonald collaboration is Nyacht. As is the cover of "For Free". DC likes to tease us with a "She's Got To Be Somewhere" here and a "Rodriguez For A Night" there, but that's all we get. There won't be a full album in this vain, IMO.

This being established, does Yacht Rock have any chances for a comeback? (A REAL comeback, and not just tributes from artists like State Cows or Young Gun Silver Fox)?
It's ironic that the genre was identified as distinct and rediscovered and its term was coined only when its heyday was long gone.
