So they could be right. It explains why 9 wasn't circled.

If the stereo stuff wasn't as carefully noted in the early days, could this explain why Capitol leaked so many alternates when they reissued early three-track recordings on new stereo LP editions of albums that came out months earlier in mono only? If the master take wasn't clearly noted on the tape boxes of the multi-track pickups, a reissue producer could mistakenly include an alternate on the stereo pressing of an album. For example, there are so many accidental alternates of Peggy Lee on the stereo editions of her early stereo albums.

Steve -- you used take 13 (or 1B) for the AP. Do you recall if you used take 15/3B for the DCC?

I can actually answer that accurately. The DCC Gold CD version was made at Capitol Studios for me on a 1:1 30 IPS stereo dupe from the take that was used (and cut out of the reel) on the STORY master reel. That was #14?

15, at least per your notes that I quoted above. I seem to recall you saying 15 was a bit worn by the time of the AP, so you opted for 13/1B as the band vocal overdub.

Ah, yes. 15 was cut out of the session reel and inserted into that side comp. master reel. I used the less worn take 13. No difference between them (that I could hear) except tape wear..

If you have absorbed this info you are now more of an expert than most who actually work at the record labels now..

"Orange Colored Sky" recorded for the 1961 album did not have the 3-track matrix tape found to be included in the SACD or was it simply only recorded on 2 channels?

As stated above, only a two track on this. The reason why has been lost to time.

Curious. Can you tell me if Analogue still has plans to relaunch other Nat albums in SACD format? I heard the SACDs re-released and I really enjoyed the sound.

Back when I worked for Goldmine magazine, I had several contacts at Capitol Records. In 2003, I put together a CD with all of Nat Cole's then-released Christmas music (I didn't include either "There's a Train Out for Dreamland," which is more a children's song than Christmas song, or the "Toys for Tots" jingle), and my Capitol contact was kind enough to give me the matrix numbers for all the tracks on The Magic of Christmas, W/SW 1444. No take numbers, alas.

    Recorded July 5, 1960
    34118 -- Away in a Manger
    34119 -- I Saw Three Ships
    34120 -- Silent Night
    34121 -- The First Noel

    Recorded July 6, 1960
34133 -- Joy to the World
    34134 -- Deck the Hall
34135 -- Hark, the Herald Angels Sing
    34136 -- O Come All Ye Faithful*
    34141 -- Adeste Fideles
    34142 -- O Tannenbaum

    Recorded July 7, 1960
    34145 -- A Cradle in Bethlehem
34146 -- God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
    34147 -- Caroling, Caroling
    34148 -- O Holy Night
    34149 -- O Little Town of Bethlehem

    * this is the all-English version of 34141 that wasn't released until the 1990s
