    The term “Hair-Metal”
Jaysus wept, every time I see it online/in print or hear someone say it, I want to smash something into feckin’ smithereens.
    It’s completely meaningless.
Seems to me it was an attempt to coin a blanket term covering a multitude of wildly different bands just because some lazy ass writer didn’t like the music on offer.

Have at it people, what really sets your teeth on edge in the world of music?

I think the term "hair metal" very aptly describes the vapid music relying exclusively on outward appearances.

You guys are supposed to come up with your own music-related things that piss you off, not turn on the OP! :D

They all had the rock hair, it was teased and sprayed... were we not supposed to notice it? I thought Ratt were pretty good anyway.

The term "Krautrock". Well I don't know if the lazy ass writer liked the music or not, but it's a lazy blanket term covering a multitude of wildly different bands that just happened to be recording in Germany at roughly the same time. I suppose I could coin a term "Yankrock" that includes Bob Dylan, The Lemon Pipers, Iron Butterfly and The Silver Apples and everything in between

Labels suck, people just love to simplistically catagorize. We all do it.

    Loudness-War-level brickwalling, of course.

Seriously, sometimes I wish the only people working in the music industry were musicians.

(But then...who would bring the coffee...)

I dunno, I thought Elektra records was pretty cool, Jac Holzman's hair looked fine, plus Stax and A&M had some good stuff, and I've liked most Ace Big Beat CDs... oh, wait, you meant...

Hair metal did influence a small cadre of butt rock bands. These guys (pretty much always guys) came to be known as hairy butt rockers.

Shoegaze. Seems derogatory. People are just jealous they can’t create such amazing sounds out of their instruments and technology (pedals).

Anytime someone says an album is "dropping."

It's been criticised a lot, but I've read that the German bands and German people in general definitely do not see it as derogatory.

Well, in the end, it's the artist that matters and whether or not one likes the actual songs. All sorts of stuff gets labeled and is ultimately immaterial to the quality of the actual artist.

For all I care, one could call Cole Porter disco and Kiss "Cool Jazz". The bottom line is both wrote great songs that I return to again and again. :)

Britpop. What a lazy, probably NME inspired term. A desperate attempt to create a 'new genre' that didn't actually exist.

I was in a hair metal band in LA back in the 80's. We really were obsessed with our hair.

It was a pretty shallow scene. But, so was the synth pop Duran Duran type thing in England at the same time.

    The 80's wasn't very deep.

I get annoyed at all the genres...

There are so many genres it is ridiculous, and few seem to be able to agree on what is and what isn't

Hair metal = Glam metal anyway.... it was just invented as a put down.

In the good ole days, dropping an album was just a literal thing. Hopefully it didn't crack and you just put it back in the jacket! :p
