You know you're getting old when half (most?) of the artists on your "favourites" playlist have died

I don't know... I teach high school, and I've seen students wearing T-shirts emblazoned with Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Beatles, & Joy Division albums. The biggest surprise was a few years ago when I witnessed a 17 year-old listening to Tom Waits' Rain Dogs on his phone. They don't subscribe to the notion that certain music "belongs" to any generation... it's all normal. So different than when I was coming of age in the 80's, trying to get my classmates to check out Jimi Hendrix... they looked at me like I was nuts. That was before 60's nostalgia kicked in and radio exploded with "classic rock" stations...

You can decide that anything is important, or not.

I think there are consequences to how people decide whether knowing their cultural history is, or is not, worth the bother. It's better, for society as well as for individuals, if people have the curiosity to find out what happened in the world before they came along.

You know you're growing when you
    stop being obsessed with death
and with checking to see if a musician
is still alive before deciding whether or not you are going to allow yourself to enjoy listening to their records.

. . . when you can spend a couple of hours figuring out which of your favourite pop artists has died, and it doesn’t seem like a monumental waste of time.

It's weird though, because some of them are genuine music fans. But many young people get band t.shirt in malls all around the world. It's just that they're available everywhere like never before. I've seen everything, from the Sex Pistols, to Nirvana, Ramones, AC/DC, Guns n' Roses, Depeche Mode etc. Even New Order, which is quite funny in France (they were never big sellers here as opposed to the UK and elsewhere).I had to explain to a kid that the Sex Pistols were a band once.
