At this size, I expect it to be a 10-SACD changer. ;)

The VU meter is actually just an animation on a touch screen, which can be used for other purposes.

Interestingly, it has 24/88 PCM output from SACDs. I thought that was not permitted for SACD players.

$1,300, the size of a tank, and still no multichannel preouts - lmao.

Gotta love expensive boutique physical media players that can't actually play back all the content on the media in question.

I didn’t realize that 11 inches wide is so giant to some people. That’s half a foot less wide than a standard CD player.

Top AKM dac, it can function as a Dac. Single ended and balanced outputs.
This might be a really good player.

Why would a stereo CD/SACD player have a 5/7.1 analog output?

With the features this player has I don’t consider it expensive. Don’t consider it a boutique player either. It’s not a universal player so why would you expect it play “all the content on media”?

What purpose do VU meters serve on a CD player?

Nowhere on the item nor on the site does it specifically state that it’s a stereo-only player. In fact, I think it’s pretty misleading for them to state “fully unlocking the capabilities of the High-Resolution SACD discs” if it isn’t multi-channel capable. That’s not fully IMO. I realize there’s only 2 analog outs and coax/optical aren’t going to supply 5.1 but there’s the I2S port…not sure if that can.

The same purpose as the additional dials on pilot watches. To impress the girls!

The most nonsensical use of VU meters is on the Meters headphones

If it's advertised as an SACD player I would expect it to support everything SACDs support (MCH being a big part of the spec and one of the concrete benefits of SACD), and it doesn't, so it's really not much more use than a $35 Sony Blu-ray player with SACD support and nothing but stereo pre-outs from a few years back, with the exception of the display.

You could spend $1,300 on a turntable that only has a mono preout, but that wouldn't prevent it from being a puzzling choice.

No where does it say multi-channel capable either. It’s fully IMO because for analog output wise it’s a stereo only player.

And I listen to music so I don't have to hear or watch the "music" in my head. ;)

Cool looking player though I have no use for it or SACD for that matter.

    I was thinking the same 11" x 11" x 3.75"
For a CD/streamer that is actually a small form factor?

If it's not multichannel capable, it doesn't fully support the SACD spec, and it's not a "fully-compliant" SACD player. It's a partially compliant, stereo-only one. Which is fine, if that's all you want for that much paper money.

I imagine it treats multichannel SACD layers the same as the $35 Sony Bluray/SACD players - refuses to play the MCH layer if you have the analog outs selected, or converts to PCM + downmixes, or streams DSD over the IIS-LVDS connector to one of the exceptionally-rare DSD IIS DACs that support that.

So, pretty compromised for the money. You'd be better off shelling out for an old Oppo.

    In your opinion.
    They give the specs
    You decide the value
They do not mislead nor make false claims. It is your interpretation that reaches that conclusion, not the facts:

Which is funny, given multi channel SACDs were a smash hit and most new SACD players are multi channel, right?

From memory... The stereo layer in a sacd is standard (required) while the multi channel is optional. I'm sure I'll be corrected shortly if that's not the case.

I think this player, on specs and features, has the potential to be a very good cd and sacd player.

I like my Marantz SACD 30n but it's not multi channel. the Shanling might be every bit as good.
