It's difficult to find a decent reproduction online, so this is why I'm posting the original painting, rather than the album cover...

Jean Delville's 1895 painting Les Trésors de Satan. The painting depicts Satan presiding over his treasures - the voluptuous bodies of some damned souls slumbering on a seabed of pearls and jewels. Delville's Satan cuts a striking figure, not some Dantean horned god, but a beautifully formed man with an incredible shock of red fiery hair dancing gracefully among the drowsy bodies, as serpents coil around him. The Treasures of Satan remains a key work for me, I first discovered the painting in my teens when it graced the cover of Morbid Angel's 1991 album Blessed Are the Sick and it gave me an appreciation for art history

There is an album cover with a guy with half of his beard shaved off. Does anyone know who the artist is?

Cover of The Exploited's 1981 live album On Stage, whose artwork captures for me at least the true essence of punk rock, not to mention the band's shambolic performance (terrific nonetheless) which brims over with barely-contained violence.

I'm surprised no one's ever done a vinyl album in a giant-sized jewel case.

Yes that would have been great for lovers of cover art. It would also mean we (I) would be able to read the liner notes.

There were a number of reasons that the CD was designed compact. Amongst the reasons were - portabilty (playable in the car, on the move etc), weight & size for shipping purposes & more importantly the cost of printing album covers was becoming an issue & CD covers was a far cheaper option.

...tons of great works of art have been used for albums. I just happen to be listening to this. Art by Corky McCoy.

Don't know why I like it. Maybe I imagine that it captures the vibe of downtown Manhattan in that era.

Only four times bigger than the real thing? Something like that ought to be the size of a door, at least.
