I'm with you on that last point. It has been years since I watched AOI. Perhaps I need a revisit. Just ordered it. Wouldn't a Scorsese New York box set be great?
A/V quality is ho-hum, but the films are all excellent, as you would expect. Aside from Chrysanthemums, which is available from Criterion, I believe this is the only BD source available for the other three, at the present time. Enjoy!
Want to say it's been since around the first of the year. Made the BN sale a nightmare not being able to pull up my list on my phone to make sure I didn't already have something.
I finally got "Night Of The Hunter" and was left completely underwhelmed...I love most of the Criterion films I have bought too..oh well..
Yes, RB, but I need to get a new multi-region Blu-ray player (one pref./w bluetooth or at least a wifi/tethering component). $$$
Been starting to collect more recently. In the last week I have purchased: Tootsie Only Angels Have Wings Easy Rider Lone Wolf And Cub (half price on ebay right now) Also have Punch Drunk Love and my first purchase was Don't Look Back.
That’s a wide selection, right there. Have you seen Lone Wolf and Cub before? Bonkers stuff, but hugely entertaining. Btw, the word on the street is that Criterion will be releasing their Zatoichi box set in the U.K. later this year. If you enjoy Lone Wolf and Cub, this is the next logical step.
The Zatoichi box is an incredible collection, though incredibly daunting. Still haven’t made it through everything and I’ve had it since it was first released. Definitely some films that are better than others, but still nice to revisit such a memorable character in so many different ways. I made one last impulse buy for the BN sale and picked up Seven Samurai, been on a huge Kurosawa kick lately. Couldn’t not do it for about $22.50.
Loved that movie even though I have only seen it once and own it. Just trying to find perfect moment to see again. Kurosawa is a great director that has missed me, but I have seen Ikuru twice. Frickin masterpieces!
I didn’t find it daunting particularly, although it was a commitment to get through everything. The standard was incredibly consistent, I thought, with only a couple toward the end of the run where I felt they were beginning to run out of steam. It took me a year to watch them all. I’d watch several at a time then put the set aside for a while before coming back to it.
Picked up the Criterion 'Dazed and Confused' Blu-ray a few days ago. I don't why it took me so long, as I love the movie. Plan on watching it within the next few days with commentary track. On a side note, I recently watched a movie called 'The Pom Pom Girls', in which 'Dazed and Confused' was heavily influenced to the point where one could almost call it a remake. Anyway, my modest collection now consists of: -A Hard Day's Night -Complete Monterey Pop Festival -Blow Up -Dazed and Confused -Fear and Loathing in Los Vegas -The Thin Red Line
The Kid The Gold Rush City Lights Modern Times The Great Dictator Hard Days Night Gimme Shelter 12 Angry Men Time Bandits Night Of The Living Dead Repo Man Jabberwocky
The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928, Dreyer) Che (2008, Soderbergh) Not films I can pop in and watch anytime but very worthy CC titles.
The Complete Jean Vigo À Propos de Nice Taris Zero de Conduite L'Atalante Got this mostly for L'Atalante, which I didn't realize until five minutes ago, was shot by Boris Kaufman! He was the cameraman on one of my three all time favorite films, Long Day's Journey Into Night (1962, Lumet). Feel a bit vindicated as I usually get eye rolls at the mention of that pick; L'Atalante seldom makes the top ten of any "best" or favorites list either though it's admired worldwide.
I picked up The Blu-Ray of Charlie Chaplin's The Kid, and I can't believe how stunning it looks! I have all of the Criterion Chaplins, and all are stunning.
The Barnes and Noble Criterion sale starts today through the month I think. I pre ordered the massive $300 Berman set for $150.
