    :) Nice ones!
The Shape of Jazz to Come did already get a decent hybrid SACD release on ORG Music. You might track it down if that's a title of interest for you.

Wouldnt that then mean MFSL use a tape copy for everything they master?

Not necessarily. Sony doesn't let their tapes off the east coast, which means that MFSL has to duplicate Sony's tape at Iron Mountain in order to have a tape to bring back to Sebastapol. Even if it's a Sony-owned album that has the "ORIGINAL MASTER RECORDING" banner, it's still a duplicate (of the original master tape, or whatever is considered to be "the" master these days). If it's another Sony album that has the "MOBILE FIDELITY SOUND LAB" banner on it, it means that MFSL copied the best available source for their reissue.

Now if they get a tape from Universal or Warner, they get the original master unless otherwise indicated as far as I know.

Their best LP in my opinion. I also love their follow-up LP "Universal Love."[IMG]

My dream MFSL reissue? "Harverd Dropout" by Lil Pump. It's a brilliant album that will fully renew your brain, but only because it will kill all of your braincells first with Pump's extreme stupidity (this is why you don't start doing excessive amounts of weed and lean at 13).

    Joking of course.:D;):laugh::agree::winkgrin:

As others have stated, I wish these audiophile companies would focus on more modern albums (90s onwards).

It also seems to me that European artists are under-represented in terms of audiophile reissues. I've read that this has a lot to do with licensing costs being higher, in particular for UK artists (for some reason I've never understood) but I'm sure it also has to do with the fact that the audiophile business is run almost exclusively by US labels (i.e. MFSL, Analogue Productions, Intervention Records, etc). I know there are European audiophile reissue labels like Speakers Corner but they don't have anywhere near the same level of exposure as MFSL and AP. What I would give for high quality masterings for the likes of Radiohead, The Cure, David Bowie, Massive Attack, Bjork, Spiritualized, Portishead just to name a few.

It's digital. I don't see MFSL doing anything that's not AAA which rules out many post 90s and many 80s albums. I would agree that Warner should reissue it on a nice pressing for those who don't have it on vinyl.

I don't have the Classic 45 rpm but about every other reissue and a UK first press. The faults on the MFSL are present on the other versions but I would say to a lesser extent on the MFSL. The MFSL does highlight more the contrast between the best sounding tracks and the lesser compressed sounding tracks. I would say all start with the same source. If the original master is missing I expect the 'master' for all of these is an early copy. Classic claimed to have used the original master tape. It's possible it was found in the archives and nobody told Roy Halee. I believe a number of original S&G tapes have been unearthed marked as Do Not Use.

Wait really? So when MOFI did the Beatles box set they really shipped the masters from Abbey Road studios to the US? Wow, imagine getting the tapes lost in the post. Also, all Blur albums released after Parklife are horibbly compressed and have the volume jacked up. Thank the loudness war for that. The 2012 remasters have even more compression. Yuck.

Cleaning up early Bathory albums, sounding like the original vinyls.
Similar to the titles on Scandinavian metal, attack 1&2

The transfer to cd on the first 5 Bathory albums was and still is a butcher job.

The records, are much more clear, evil sounding, the CDs seem rushed, the speed at which they were transferred is different than the records.
    Shame!!

You don't know the story? Let me tell you. The guy transporting ALL of the Beatles Master tapes for mofi was carrying them in some kind of case. Obviously, he was quite nervous, and had a death grip on case, as any of us would have. He was in the airport, and sure enough, some punk came up behind him and grabs the case and tries to run. According to Stan Ricker, he must have seen his life flash before his eyes, and held on for dear life. He had the presence of mind to swing another bag into the head of this guy and the punk let go and ran away. Yes, he almost stole most of the Beatles master tapes. It was the last time they were ever let out of EMI again. True story.

No kidding? I would have expected EMI to escort the master tape boxes with armed gaurds! How do labels ship the masters, through the post or on an airplane?

Then, they were hand carried. At least they had the brains to not just ship them out. Today, I'm not sure how most master tapes are sent. Maybe Steve can shed some light on that. I just can't imagine that for any master tape, someone is "mailing" it out.

  17. There's a lot more red tape apparently for a U.S. audiophile label to remaster a UK-based act, which is why you find Audio Fidelity and the like concentrating mostly on easier-to-license American acts.

    That's right. In-mix compression can
be dealt with - that is, removed - by
going back to the multitracks ( provided
there was no compression device placed
    between an electrically amplified instru-

ment and the tracking console ) such that
what exists on the multitracks is what
    engi-
neers have to work with, quicquid
    ut perveniet.

Yeah, but CD is my favorite format and we don't have a definitive version of the album on Compact Disc. I'll keep the 2004 remaster by now...
