I do not own a lot of albums by female artists, but of the ones I own, Ive listened to this one the most. Sophie B. Hawkins, Tongues and Tails. I need to listen to it, it has been a while. https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lI4oZ4bpeab7hCVC7f08Pveu4xHp_p4Zo
Music is so subjective! I just played your recommendation and I was pleased to turn her off! Maybe I will try again once my toothache wears off and the painkillers kick in!
I completely forgot Back to Black by Amy Winehouse. A short album of perfection. Spawned a whole lot of wannabees.
My immediate thought was "Dusty in Memphis," but that's already been said and said. So Amy Winehouse's "Back in Black." Cyndi Lauper's "She's So Unusual" is about 80% of the way there. If female-led groups count, then "Germfree Adolescents" by X-Ray Spex. Or the Pretenders' 1st and 3rd albums. If 100% female groups count, then "Beauty and the Beat" by the Go-Go's. If greatest hits compilations count (and they never do), then Missy Elliott's. Or the Ronettes.
As others have said, picking just one is tough but an album that finds its way onto my TT a lot is "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" by Judy Collins.
1? I couldn't possibly pick one, so forgive me and ignore me if this is too outside what you're after Bjork's first four albums Tori Amos Little Earthquakes and Under the Pink Joni Mitchell Ladies of the Canyon, Court and Spark and Hejira Pat Benatar Crimes Of Passion and Seven The Hard Way Stevie Nicks Bella Donna and Wild At Heart Joan Armatrading Self Titled, Me Myself I and Walk Under Ladders Rickie Lee Jones Debut and Pirates Suzi Quatro Quatro and If You Knew Suzi Joan Jett Bad Reputation and I Love Rock And Roll Brandi Carlisle The Story and Bear Creek Marianne Faithful Broken English and Childs Adventure PJ Harvey Stories From The City That's probably about as streamlined as I can get. I love all these albums, and all these ladies are worth exploring further... I just think these are the best.
obvious ones for me Madonna, Donna Summer (I Remember Yesterday), Pat Benatar (Get Nervous), Phyllis Hyman (You Know How to Love Me) and Toni Braxton. Sure some others, hard to pick just one
Hard to narrow, but here's my top 3 (atm) Bjork - Debut Amy Winehouse - Back to Black Sarah Blasko - The Overture & The Underscore As an aside, I'd add Sade's greatest hits compilation
True dat. My collection is at least 60% female, or female-vocal-centric. I couldn't even tell you my favorite drawer.
Something about the premise of the thread makes me a bit uncomfortable (would not most female artists be against this sort of gender-based delimiting, or whatever the correct way of saying it would be?) but in any case I'm going to use it as an opportunity to wave a flag for a great album, Ichiko Hashimoto's second solo release, Ichiko: a cohesive, varied-within-set-bounds album of piano music shot through with tinges of jazz and Satie, and dotted with subtle vocal detailing, both sung and spoken. Sunken Star is a great Side 2 opener (and in four years has garnered under 700 views on YouTube - check it out and help make the numbers look respectable!). Splendid stuff.
Usually it's "Hounds Of Love" by Kate Bush, but lately it's been Laura Nyro's "Eli & The 13th Confession".
I'm putting this here since it hasn't been mentioned yet--the whole album, but this single sounds so great. Mono's the way to go with this one. Etta James - Tell Mama
I came here to nominate her album "The Soul of All Natural Things", which I think is even better than Parallelograms. Other possible contenders: Joni Mitchell - The Hissing of Summer Lawns Judy Dyble - Enchanted Garden
