Well, the only three LPs from this year in popular music that I really liked were as follows: Counting Crows' second album is probably the pick of the litter. That's a fantastic record from start to finish. There are 14 tracks on it, and about 10 are absolutely first-rate in my opinion. I agree with Adam Duritz that it's the best album the Crows ever made. 1996 is the beginning of a decline in popular music, I think. The years 1992 to 1995 saw a lot of great releases and quite dynamic and artist-centered scenes in the various Anglo-centers of music, wherein commercial 'sell-out' kind of plastic music didn't necessarily rule all of the charts. But 1996 is where the corporations started (re-)taking full control. I turned 20 in 1996, and by 1999 I was checked out of contemporary popular music as nearly everything popular sucked.

That said, '94, '95, and '97 were absolutely epochal years for me so I guess '96 was kind of the breather in the run.

1996, a great year for music to me. The tail end of Britpop, and after picking up Sparklehorse's Vivadixie early that year, this really sparked my interest in US Alternative stuff, beyond the usual Nirvana/Pumpkins etc. To me, some of the Britpop albums have aged better than others. I almost listed those by Sleeper, Kula Shaker and Shed Seven, then realised that whilst I like them, I wouldn't consider them amongst my faves as I rarely play them. I suppose there could be others within the list that I perhaps loved at the time but rarely revisit. I would actually find it quite hard narrowing these down to any kind of top 10/15 so will present them in no order. I think the first section of these haven't been mentioned yet. Idaho - Three Sheets to the Wind Jawbox - Jawbox Low - The Curtain Hits the Cast Strangelove - Love & Other Demons Heatmiser - Mic City Sons Delgados - Domestiques Lambchop - How I Quit Smoking Arab Strap - The Week Never Starts Round Here Afghan Whigs - Black Love Guided By Voices - Under the Bushes Under the Stars R.E.M. - New Adventures in Hi-Fi Beck - Odelay Red House Painters - Songs For a Blue Guitar eels - Beautiful Freak Super Furry Animals - Fuzzy Logic Weezer - Pinkerton Lush - Lovelife Cocteau Twins - Milk & Kisses Ash - 1977 Robert Pollard - Not in My Airforce Sleater-Kinney - Call the Doctor dEUS - In a Bar Under the Sea The Cure - Wild Mood Swings Suede - Coming Up Bob Mould - Bob Mould Modest Mouse - This is a Long Drive. . . I think of the mid-'90s as being a bleak time for the types music I enjoy, but a glance over my iTunes "most-played" statistics shows that there were actually a bunch of albums released in 1996 that I love. Julie Andrews - Here I'll Stay: The Words of Alan Jay Lerner Cake - Fashion Nugget David Campbell - Yesterday Is Now Mary Chapin Carpenter - A Place in the World Shawn Colvin - A Few Small Repairs Lucy Kaplansky - Flesh and Bone Lyle Lovett - The Road to Ensenada Megon McDonough - My One and Only Love Maureen McGovern - Out of This World Lynn Miles - Slightly Haunted Prince - Emancipation Duncan Sheik - Duncan Sheik Dar Williams - Mortal City OST - Grace of My Heart VA - Disney's Music from the Park
Added a couple more, in bold. Not earth-shattering releases but ones I really enjoyed at the time especially. Along with the others from the top section, I don't think these have been mentioned by anyone else: Idaho - Three Sheets to the Wind Jawbox - Jawbox Low - The Curtain Hits the Cast Strangelove - Love & Other Demons Heatmiser - Mic City Sons Delgados - Domestiques Lambchop - How I Quit Smoking Arab Strap - The Week Never Starts Round Here Cable - Down-lift the Up-trodden Subcircus - Carousel (original, not '97 reissue that shuffled the tracks about and had different sleeve) Afghan Whigs - Black Love Guided By Voices - Under the Bushes Under the Stars R.E.M. - New Adventures in Hi-Fi Beck - Odelay Red House Painters - Songs For a Blue Guitar eels - Beautiful Freak Super Furry Animals - Fuzzy Logic Weezer - Pinkerton Lush - Lovelife Cocteau Twins - Milk & Kisses Ash - 1977 Robert Pollard - Not in My Airforce Sleater-Kinney - Call the Doctor dEUS - In a Bar Under the Sea The Cure - Wild Mood Swings Suede - Coming Up Bob Mould - Bob Mould Modest Mouse - This is a Long Drive. . .
