Well, the only three LPs from this year in popular music that I really liked were as follows:
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Counting Crows' second album is probably the pick of the litter. That's a fantastic record from start to finish. There are 14 tracks on it, and about 10 are absolutely first-rate in my opinion. I agree with Adam Duritz that it's the best album the Crows ever made.

1996 is the beginning of a decline in popular music, I think. The years 1992 to 1995 saw a lot of great releases and quite dynamic and artist-centered scenes in the various Anglo-centers of music, wherein commercial 'sell-out' kind of plastic music didn't necessarily rule all of the charts. But 1996 is where the corporations started (re-)taking full control. I turned 20 in 1996, and by 1999 I was checked out of contemporary popular music as nearly everything popular sucked.

A weird year in that there were a bunch of solid albums but very few that had a lasting effect on me beyond a couple of songs each. That said, '94, '95, and '97 were absolutely epochal years for me so I guess '96 was kind of the breather in the run.

1996, a great year for music to me. The tail end of Britpop, and after picking up Sparklehorse's Vivadixie early that year, this really sparked my interest in US Alternative stuff, beyond the usual Nirvana/Pumpkins etc. To me, some of the Britpop albums have aged better than others. I almost listed those by Sleeper, Kula Shaker and Shed Seven, then realised that whilst I like them, I wouldn't consider them amongst my faves as I rarely play them. I suppose there could be others within the list that I perhaps loved at the time but rarely revisit. I would actually find it quite hard narrowing these down to any kind of top 10/15 so will present them in no order. I think the first section of these haven't been mentioned yet.

I think of the mid-'90s as being a bleak time for the types music I enjoy, but a glance over my iTunes "most-played" statistics shows that there were actually a bunch of albums released in 1996 that I love.
