Quite dug Chris de Burgh around the time of 'Spanish Train'. Fairly sure he was never hip.

Back in '73 the Jethro Tull fans at my school teased me for listening to Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

Okay, I'm pretty sure Tony Orlando & Dawn were never hip, but I am glad I have a CD of their hits... there are a few good sides on there! Every now and then I just have to hear Candida, y'know?

Always??? In the early 80's about everyone I knew thought he was hip. Friends, classmates, neighbors, parents, cousins, aunts, brother-in-laws, even grandparents could dig him. Not sure if that makes him hit or not. I think he is though, if that helps.

I think Bread has become a little more hip since Cake covered "Guitar Man". They have been hip to me since the mid-70's.

If hipsters are mid 30's-late 40's then I would say what stuff they would bring to "bring your own vinyl" night at one of the local clubs. Usually a night early in the week where you can bring an LP and they will play a side. And you can buy Pabst "tall boys" for 1.00.

Hey, I wonder if Annie's Song (You Fill Up My Senses) ever gets labelled a 'lost psychedelic masterpiece' on ebay?

If "hip" is judged by common bargain bin CDs then Counting Crows, Everclear and Jewel. If it is bands that are unpopular where I live then Sloan, whom I saw for $20 at a venue with 40 people in attendance. Got to chat with Jay for 10 minutes afterwards and find out he also love ELO's Time. I love power pop and those bands are the coolest of the uncool. Gotta say I really like Julian Lennon's Valotte, Help Yourself and Photograph Smile albums, but the others are very spotty. When I was 12 my fave artists were Cat Stevens and Phil Collins, the latter is uncool except for one song/one drum fill.

    John Denver.

Example of how unhip he was: In 1976, at the height of his popularity, he played several nights at the sold-out London Palladium. And as part of his set every night he actually did a hokey juggling bit between songs -- like some sort of all-around-entertainer from the days of Vaudeville.

Now, what's really amazing about this is that when he released an LP, "Live In London," from this stand at the Palladium, the album included the damned juggling bit. That's right: an audio-only release included a purely visual form of entertainment -- juggling. How did that conversation go down when they were sequencing the album? "Well, John, this is going to be a single LP, and we only have room for one more track. We don't have "Rocky Mountain High" or these other six hits in the line-up yet ... Which one do you want to include?" "Hey, forget those songs. Let's put the juggling bit on the record instead." "Uhhh, OK...."

It's such a bizarre thing to do, it might actually be evidence of how hip he was...
