The movie was genius in that way. :)

That Thing You Do will always be a classic to me. I even have an extended version with "extra" scenes. They ruin it. They destroy the innocence of the whole thing. In a way, they bring the characters from being charmingly two dimensional to being too three dimensional.

Perhaps some of the music--especially during their weirdo experimental period--has become hip (and rightfully so, being so awesome), but I don't think their image was ever cool. Again, apart from Dennis who had the natural swag.

    IMO.

All kidding aside, I think their CD "Knock On The Sky" is one of the best concept recordings I have ever heard!

Maybe I’m not getting the OPs question, but if Springsteen and Dire Staits and Mamas and Papas and Lynyrd Skynyrd ain’t hip, then in the words of Tower of Power: “What is hip? tell me, tell me...”

Let me preface this by saying that I gather it´s a sign of totally lacking the hipness-gene if I happen to like an artist. And I wouldn´t have it any other way. Who really cares about the concept of "hip" when you get to be more than twenty years? I never did. So most of the artists mentioned here are dear friends of mine, musically speaking.

As far as Chris de Burgh is concerned, I´m with you 100%, Mark. (That is, if I read you correctly in stating that you like his records up to and including "MAN ON THE LINE".) I liked "THE GETAWAY", when it was released, but I had a hard time adjusting to the sound of "MAN ON THE LINE", for some reason. I grew to love it, but I have been unable to appreciate anything he´s done since. His first five albums, covered on the immaculate compilation "BEST MOVES", are his best work, I think, and include great songs like "SATIN GREEN SHUTTERS", "SPANISH TRAIN", "THE TRAVELLER", "BROKEN WINGS (live), "PATRICIA THE STRIPPER" etc. I particularly love the album "EASTERN WIND". Came across it at just the right time in my life, I suppose.

And then came "LADY IN RED"... I don´t hate it, but that´s when I abandoned (s)hip. :agree:

Good question. Miles Davis would be a good benchmark for hipness. I guess you could define it as those who create the zeitgeist of their era. The Beatles were obviously hip, The Captain and Tenille not so much. Same era, but worlds apart on the hipness scale.
