If that's your criteria I'm not sure that list satisfies it with the possible exception of Sting. I bet all the others would get good scores if they happened to choose them for retrospective reviews.

For instance, they went all in on The War On Drugs who have massive Springsteen and Dire Straits vibes.

This is also kind of a surprising choice as Fahey was very much a name to drop in the 2000s among artists like Six Organs of Admittance, Jack Rose, James Blackshaw, Jim O'Rourke, Richard Bishop etc.

I don't even know what the real criteria should be here but I'll say Erasure.

Any questioning of the genius of Brian Wilson will get you immediately expelled from the hip fraternity.

I absolutely love Bruce Springsteen, but he's no hip.

Hip is My Bloody Valentine, Kendrick Lamar or Billie Eilish

Short answer - a lot of them. Here are a few:

    - Herman's Hermits
    - Gerry and the Pacemakers
    - Gary Lewis and the Playboys

Springsteen has been a giant influence on most of the bigger indie rock artists for a decade or so now. He’s definitely considered cool, maybe more so than anyone else from that era at this point. And pitchfork covers him a LOT ;)

It was an ok little ballad that just got flogged to death.

The Getaway was the first album I knew of, and I bought it on a whim. The only song I knew was Ferryman, and at 12 or 13 I thought that was pretty cool, but the album was great. Borderline, Counting On You, Revolution.
Then I went back, and by pure luck bought Spanish Train, and it is an all time classic.
Man On The Line was less than both of those, but I still enjoyed it particularly Transmission Ends.
If you like Concert Dvd's , Beautiful Dreams is good. The last track Snows Of New York is really good too ... which I guess is a later song.

I haven´t seen any of his live DVDs. I was on the verge of buying one once, and I might just take the plunge. Beautiful dream is the symphonic orchestra one, right?

The austrian Falco? Still quite hip here in austria, but sadly underrated nevertheless. The "Junge Roemer" and "Data De Groove" LPs are masterpieces and both tanked. People want to hear "Der Kommissar", "Vienna Calling" or "Rock Me Amadeus" instead of the cool stuff :sigh:

None of my favorite artists are hip at present, but I will go with The Beatles as my favoritist.

As to artists that were never hip it is between Abba, The Monkees and The Partridge Family.

I've been to Austria many times. Love it. Is there still a table reserved for Falco at the Marchfelderhof?

Hipness comes and goes so I don't know where Neil Diamond sits right now. I do know I've seen him live more times than I can count and I never left disappointed. Luckily, I married a fellow Neil fan because that's the kind of thing that can make or break a relationship.
