How exactly do you figure that they were 'a 'backing band'?

I'm sure he's referring to their days backing Ronnie Hawkins (as The Hawks) and especially Bob Dylan.

i am not a big elvis fan these days , but i will tell you i saw the attractions in the am guessing late 70's and man did the smoke. the tension between costello and naive was obvious and the rhythm section was smoking.

It's probably Motown's Funk Brothers for me, I guess 'cuz I was born in Detroit and grew up there.

L.A.'s Wrecking Crew collective are on equal footing, as are Philadelphia's 'M.F.S B.'

The Heartbreakers. Not only did their career with Tom Petty span 40 years, constantly putting out new, relevant music... But they were also all very prominent musicians on other peoples albums as collaborators and producers.

Any band made up of Nashville studio players- they're got practically unbeatable chops when it comes to guitar based music. Jeff Beck was glad they weren't better known bc, in his words, 'I'd be out job.' I view a backing band as more than a sympathetic backdrop to the front person, that's not too hard once the band is played in bit. Being infinitely versatile and knowing half a million songs coupled with the ability to be fluent in many genres puts you right up at the top. Sorry Attractions and crazy Horse, you need not apply.

I probably thought about this in February and couldn't think of anything I'm excited about. Heartbreakers and E Street Band certainly have the talent and many moments, but sometimes they're uninteresting to me. I finally identified a favorite. The News. Yeah, Huey Lewis's band! They're not individually famous, but the prime years lineup was always lively, varied the style, showed off on every instrument, and could sing well also. Built from a version that was good enough for Elvis Costello.
