I have! The Philips Duo sound is warm, the SHM SACD is more open, more direct, clearer, but also colder. More tape hiss on the SHM too.
Interesting as one of them just finished playing moments before I saw this thread title. Hi, George, For something off the beaten track, you might enjoy this one: music by Felix Mendelssohn's sister, Fanny, a nicely varied collection of solo/small ensemble vocal and solo piano music. I wouldn't claim it's necessarily "deep" or "profound," but I find it consistently lovely listening, certainly far more fresh and appealing than that boring piano concerto by Clara Schumann that always gets trotted out as classical radio's nod to showing "we're doing our part for women composers of the 19th century." Good performances and recording, too. I don't think US Amazon has it, but the UK office does https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fanny-Hensel-Italian-Journey/dp/B000BNTAM0 as does Presto Mendelssohn, Fanny: Italian Journey Probably other places do, maybe at better prices, but I stopped looking after those two.
I have these recordings and quite like them, however I have a sound issue on the 5th Brandenburg. I am hearing occasional digital clicks or ticks. They are not very loud, but enough to be a bit annoying. I wonder if its just my copy, or whether they are on the recording?
The APs sound great. However, the RCAs do not sound "dull and muddy" on my system. They are very much alive!
What do folks think of the mastering on this one? On my stereo (a new amplifier), the sound comes across as cold and a bit harsh.
