Came here to post a few faves, most of whom have already been mentioned - Television, The Birthday Party, Sonic Youth - a couple that haven’t - Come (Thalia Zadek + Chris Brokaw), Green River (permutations of Mudhoney + Pearl Jam), and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (Jon Spencer + Judah Bauer).

But started wondering how many of em basically came out of the classic Stones period, Keith and Mick Taylor.

Not a band per say but Al Dimeola and Paco De lucia on Mediteranean Sundance is as good as it gets... they played it together live for soo many years i think it counts despite them not being in a band together... John Mclaughlin appeared with them ocassionally too.

Edit - woop just seen title says rock... well maybe this is on the fringe but Dimeola had a few sotra rocky forays

Extra points for those two duos because they also win “guitar players who really listen to what the other guy is playing”.

Derek sure brought the improvisational fire back to that band.
I buy LP’s just because he guests on a song.

And so unorthodox too. He can be easy to overlook, given how Garcia gets all the attention, but he’s a very important of the Dead’s sound.

    Yo,

For a band that you can still see live today, or hear on many recordings, I'd have to say Paul Barrere & Fred Tackett from LITTLE FEAT offer a great guitar team...

When LITTLE FEAT aren't performing / touring, they can be found doing their guitar duet as "Paul & Fred".

    Great stuff !!!

Saw Paul & Fred last year. Great show. Fred even played mandolin about 40% of the songs.
I think a great duo is missing so far. Lonesome Dave Peverett and Rod Price of Foghat. They were the epitome of early 70s boogie rock.

Also my second favorite ever post Iommi, Ozzy guitarist, though very short tenure

When i think of double guitar bands i automatically think of twin-lead guitar which is different. Thin Lizzy were the greatest as far as i were concerned, the Gorham/Robertson combo in particular.

Here is version of a Lizzy classic i'd not heard before. One of the comments reads: "Wow, Brian is playing his 1950's Les Paul (the one supposedly made for Les Paul's wife, Mary Ford): lightweight, trapeze bridge + soapbar pick-ups! Have only seen it once before, on the "Still in Love with the Blues" VHS cover. Good to see it saw action with Lizzy, presumably a half million dollar guitar now (2016), with a history like that and the unusual configuration."
