Can be a single, album, a later compilation focusing on the year . . . whatever.

Doesn't have to be a list, though of course you can post a list if you want. You can also just post one title at a time as you think of it/run across it (which is what I do in these threads).

    Thad Jones - Thad Jones

I wasn't sure what year to list this as--it's a compilation of 1954's The Fabulous Thad Jones and 1955's Jazz Collaborations, Vol. 1 (which was credited as Charles Mingus & Thad Jones).

The comp, originally a 1956 release (Debut DEB-127), is what you're likely to find now, on CD, on streaming, etc., also with a couple bonus tracks--alternate takes. The comp is usually going to be found under the title of The Fabulous Thad Jones--as if it's the 1954 10" release.

Aside from Thad Jones, this great album (or great comp of two 10" albums) also features Charles Mingus on bass, Max Roach and Kenny Clarke on drums, Hank Jones and John Dennis on piano, and Frank Wess on tenor and flute.

From Elvis: the bluesy/noir "heartbreak hotel" plus the double A-side single "hound dog / don't be cruel". Pure rock'n'roll!

Bill Haley and His Comets - Rock'n Roll Stage Show. A great party album. Haley only sings four of the tracks. Went to #1 in the U.K.

    Heartbreak Hotel for me.
Still a somewhat original sounding track. Inescapably good.

Elvis was sensational in 1956, but just as good in a completely different way:

Black Coffee by Peggy Lee. I think Peggy was at the peak of her artistry around this time.

Everyone on Chess. 1956 was a great year for blues, Chuck Berry & the mighty Bo Diddley.

Eddie Cochran too, The Johnny Burnette Trio, and The Girl Can't Help It film, Gene Vincent... Julie London's debut...

It must have been an incredibly exciting time to gave been young. A lot of this music still sounds exciting now. Over the last couple of years I've been really into 50s music. Some of the recordings are incredible sounding.

Great country from The Louvin Brothers too. The Everly Brothers starting...

I'm lucky enough to have a few original pressings of LPs from around 1956, including the UK HMV Elvis albums and Little Richard. The sound quality on some, Julie London - Julie Is My Name springs to mind, is staggering. I consider myself lucky and it a privilege to have these records. There's nothing like hearing this music on something that's survived that long, though to be honest, my Elvis debut is a bit of a worn out mess. But at least it's there!

I didn't want to start going down the jazz road. There's so many! I forgot Calendar Girl is from 1956. That means she recorded three quality albums that year, the other being Lonely Girl.

There are a lot in your list I haven't heard, but the ones I have are all great.

Got to include a bit of the beautiful, charming and talented Doris Day. Her 1956 Day By Day LP is a really good one that isn't schmaltzy. More of a Peggy Lee / Julie London laid back style on it.

Julie London is really underrated. Most of her albums range from the very good to the fantastic.

I was playing About The Blues a couple of days ago. Wonderful. I have most of the 50s albums. Some originals, some on the sensational sounding 80s French Pathe Marconi pressed reissues. Any of the Capitol or Liberty stuff pressed there or in the UK in the 80s is exceptional sounding.

That style of music works equally well on my main stereo separates, or on my humble Dansette in my avatar in the small hours. That record player is almost as old as the music we're talking about. It's from around 1959. Incredible that it still works well.
