Johnny Burnette & the Rock 'n' Roll Trio - Train Kept A-Rollin'.

Paul Burlisson should get more credit for his contribution to rock guitar inventing distortion by playing through a damaged tube amp. I know blues players like Pat O'Hare had got there first but I think Burlisson is the first rocker to do it. It's easy to see why the Yardbirds with Jeff Beck would choose to cover it.

I take your point but then there isn’t too much in the world of rock that Chuck hasn’t left his imprint on.

And vice-versa - I'm guessing that you might have heard Clarence Garlow's 'pre-Chuck' Route 90/Crawfishin'?

Not too mention Louis Jordan’s Saturday Night Fish Fry. And so it goes back into the mists of time.

I meant to include Midnight Special/Sweet Little 16 in the previous post with reference to Garlow as well; of course, Surfin' USA also fits into that 'chain of events' too.

I have Garlow's New Bon Ton Roulay but I'm not familiar with the ones you've mentioned unless you count Johnny Winter's cover of Route 90. A hole in my knowledge it looks like I'm going to have to fill. Many thanks for the steer.

1954, Maxwell Davis producing, Willard McDaniels on the piano IIRC.

I'd also put the odds that Burlison didn't know about Hare at about zero too, not only were they both in Memphis, but Burlison allegedly used to sit in on the Wolf's radio show too.

In the past decade or so, I've also come to understand the influence that Rev. Utah Smith exerted when it comes to "distorted electric guitar," as he was "going there" in the early 1940s.

Yes, if that's not Sweet Little Sixteen in all but the words then I don't know what is. I suppose as artists were rarely on royalties for their compositions in those days I guess little attention was paid to plagiarism.

Utah Davis, another one for me to look up. Stop this!

Reminds me of the John Loudermilk/Charlie Daniels lawsuit from some years back, when JL sued Daniels over his alleged borrowing from JL's Bad News for one of his hits; Daniels won after demonstrating that there were musical elements of both songs that went back to at least the era of the American Revolution in the 18th century.

Ham Jackson hardly ever gets any props...

Road to Rock | Vintage Guitar® magazine
"Some rock critics hear the 1949 Louis Jordan hit “Saturday Night Fish Fry” and claim it as the first rock and roll song. In hindsight, the song’s tight, swinging horn lines still keep it tethered to the world of jump blues or boogie-woogie, but thanks to its dirty electric-guitar licks – attributed a picker named James “Ham” Jackson – you can tell that rock music was just around the corner. In fact, this is perhaps a perfect transitional recording, featuring both swinging horns and electric guitar. Yet in just a few short years, the horn sections would fade away and, in their stead, kids would hear a whole lotta electric guitar."
