Can be a single, album, a later compilation focusing on the year . . . whatever. Doesn't have to be a list, though of course you can post a list if you want. You can also just post one title at a time as you think of it/run across it (which is what I do in these threads). (I'm going to eventually be doing one of these for every year from 1920 to 1963 (we already have threads for every year from 1964), and then for wider periods prior (decades, etc.) Of course, anyone else is free to start the others before I get to them, but just let me know if you do so we can avoid duplicates.)
This has to be the most famous, and infamous. Louie Louie, the Kingsmen...to my mind, one of the first grunge tunes, and garage bands' constant cover song. We all played it. No one could really understand the lyrics, but we all loved the insinuations; at least that was the constant word on the street. . The Kingsmen's recording was the subject of an FBI investigation about the supposed, but nonexistent, obscenity of the lyrics, an investigation that ended without prosecution.[3] Ironically, the recording notably includes the drummer yelling "****!" after dropping his drumstick at the 0:54 mark. -wiki

Irma Thomas - Ruler of My Heart Written by Allen Toussaint. Toussaint also penned an alternate version, under the pseudonym Naomi Neville - his mother’s maiden name - with different lyrics, titled “Pain in My Heart.” The latter would be become a popular R&B number in the 60s, covered by several artists including The Rolling Stones and Otis Redding.
