You don't have to post a big list all at once. Just add some favorite tunes/pieces whenever you think of them.

Since we have a lot of audiophiles on the board, feel free to recommend some of your favorite recordings of the music you list.

Far from my favorite era of music but the Brahms Ballades are lovely. Other than them I much prefer his late piano music though. Here's some Gilels live.

By some accounts this is rather from 1849, but that's listed more often as the year of completion when the date is disputed. I prefer the year of first publication if it's not too far off. I'm not sure when the premiere of this piece was, but the date of first print publication was apparently 1859, so that's another thing that's making me favor the later date for these threads (since this is the 1850s thread).

John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry was in Oct. 1959 and he was executed that Dec., so the song's origins may have been in the 1850s but it did not become widespread til the 1860s. Nonetheless, good choice.

As heard in one of my favorite Tom & Jerry episodes "Johann Mouse", one of 7 that won an academy award
