That's not Annie Haslam on "Moonlight Shadow." It's a singer named Maggie Reilly.

As for the list, has anybody mentioned...

Shoot Out the Lights--Richard and Linda Thompson
    Paint the Sky With Stars--Enya

a lot of great choices here.

    Art Garfunkle Water Mark

Robert Plant Led Zeppelin II. Robert Plant can't sing like this anymore. Only a young man could sing with that much energy and range.

    Lyle Lovett Joshua Judges Ruth

Peter Gabriel Selling England by the Pound

James Taylor Sweet Baby James and New Moon Shine

Annie Haslam did a cover of Moonlight Shadow on a live CD from Brazil. It was brilliant a take on that song.

Ah heh hem! I do beg to differ Tullman, as I'm not a young man and I can still and always sing from the bottom of say Louis Armstrong's That's How A Song Was Born, to the upper stratesphere of Don Henley's Boys Of Summer.;)

Although generally speaking, I do agree.:)

Don't know if I would say it's my absolute favorite, but I love Mel Torme -- Live at the Maisonette. Not a bad track on it and his Gershwin medley is amazing, although I could understand questioning the wisdom of his version of Superstition, into which he interpolates, inter alia, the James Bond theme.

    Hey Jimbo,
Re-Read my post, I was referring to this CD: Track Number 1

    I guess you misunderstood.:)

I also enjoyed her Columbia Self Titled CD. Didn't she do a great job on Michael Oldfields "Moonlight Shadow"?

  8. I have to go with Joni Mitchell, Blue.
I know we were asked to stick to regular releases, but I would also like to mention Dionne Warwick's greatest hits. Did she have regular album releases?

Oops, sorry about that. I did misread your original post. I'll have to check out Haslam's version. :)

Michael mentioned Enya. I guess it's time I came out of the closet on this artist and admit I'm a huge fan and think she is a genius. i know her music has become wallpaper for many people but it isn't her fault that her music is over exposed. But look at what she does. She writes the music, arranges and performs all the instrumentals (with the ocasional exception of a guest solo musician). and she sings all the parts.

By the way her name is pronounced en-ee-ah with three distinct sylabols. It is not en-ya like onion

Glad I got that off my chest

Besides all the classics that have been mentioned that are closest to my heart (e.g. Van, Marvin, Al, Otis, Aretha, etc.), a more recent pleasure has been Diana Krall. She gets ripped by the jazzbo community as being superflyweight, but luckily I am not a member of the jazzbo community. :)

Diana has become a more noticably confident and comfortable vocalist of late (especially on her last two albums). While she doesn't have huge range, she definitely is learning what works for her in terms of phrasing, slurring, etc. I also like to pop in her new Live in Paris DVD to get the benefit of the, um, attractive visuals.

I was hooked the first time I heard her! Some of her stuff reminds me of "Church Organ Music" a definite spiritual undertone.

Aretha has been brought up several times, but I want to place a vote for her mid-to-late Atlantic years rather than the early dynamite of Never Loved a Man/Lady Soul/etc. I think Aretha relaxed (and improved, if that is considered possible) when she didn't reach for the mountaintop vocally on every song. My Aretha favorites are those along the line of Don't Play That Song, Brand New Me, Oh Me Oh My, Day Dreaming, Until You Come Back To Me, I'm In Love, Without Love, and my #1 all-time Aretha favorite, her greatest ever, ANGEL. (I get goosebumps just thinking of that song).

Gotta go with Julie London's "Cry Me a River" Some of the best late night vocalising ever. Of course you can't go wrong with Ella ever! Also put me on the list for the Leonard Cohen. Jennifer Warne's "Famous Blue Raincoat "will get you through an all night listening session as well. Pretty much anything by Nat King Cole. Jeez did you say only one!!!!!

1)Van Morrison-Moondance my personal favorite album of all time

2)Sade-The Best of: never get tired of hearing her sexy sweet voice

3)Curtis Mayfield-Superfly: My personal favorite of all the soul singers.Has a vocal delivery as smooth as butter.

    4)Grateful Dead-American Beauty:great harmonies

5)Beach Boys-Pet Sounds:God only knows is as good as it gets in my book

6)Chris Isaak-Baja Sessions:perfectly captures the laid back Roy Orbison-Americana sound and a south of the border feel.Probably all things considered my best recorded and highest fidelity cd-amazing!
