Remember A Day captures that golden childhood late-afternoon long shadows mood perfectly.

Yes but Rick sings both of those songs. he doesn't sing Us and Them.

I don't pay attention to either of those things when listening to music so that might be why.

I've yet to hear Endless River.

Yes but he doesn't sing it. He sings Stay.

I went for Remember A Day from the list. It's a great song. I know there's a lot of affection for Wright's early pop sensibilities, but realistically there wasn't a place for it in the band's live show, so it was always a sideline.

In terms of his compositional contribution, it's rarely mentioned how prominent Wright's characteristic 16 bar chord progressions were in the Floyd's music: Celestial Voices, Breast Milky, Great Gig, Shine On part 9.

Syd is playing acoustic and electric guitar on Paintbox.

  5. The Great Gig In The Sky, with Remember A Day close behind. If Us And Them had been an option I'd have chosen that one.

The lyrics to Paintbox always struck me as something that Morrissey could have written, even though the tune really doesn't sound like one of his.

But... he doesn't sing The Great Gig in the Sky... and he sings backing vocals on Us and Them:hide:

Re: Us and Them: there is a beautiful instrumental, piano only version of this I think from DSOTM Immersion? Anyhow, captures Rick and his awesome chording inversions in very intimate fashion.

I voted Stay as it's my favourite of his languid laments to one-night-stands. Plenty of good stuff in similar vein on Wet Dream (like 'Holiday').

But he wrote The Great Gig In the Sky without assistance from another Floyd member. His vocals on Us and Them weren't lead vocals.

Ugh.... tough choice between "Sysyphus" and "Summer '68" for me. Two very different songs, obviously - but equally fantastic in my opinion.

Rick was also my favorite songwriter/member of the band, and I dare say he was the most crucial.

Yes, Floyd became more about the lyrics (according to Roger at least) and the guitar solos, but that unmistakable, all-important "thing" that tied it all together and dictated what WAS Floyd: was Rick. Even if it was just something based upon a chord structure of his: it was there

"Summer '68", closely followed by "Stay". Both masterpieces!

"Summer '68" would be my pick.

Seeing the titles together, I get the feeling that the constant presence of "Great Gig in the Sky" on Pink Floyd greatest hits albums was probably done to keep Richard happy (kind of like how the Beatles keep including Ringo's "Octopus's Garden" on compilations).

I picked "Paint Box", but it easily could have been "Stay", "Summer '68", "Sysyphus", "Remember a Day" or "Wearing the Inside Out". Rick's songs were great. I love that version of "Breakthrough" he does with Gilmour! Wow is that a great song! Rick deserves much more credit...

"Paint Box" should have been the A-Side. It's a 60's pop single masterpiece. In my eyes. I love that track!
