Santana fans absolutely must hear the following album:

Luis Gasca - For Those Who Chant

Yes, you are seeing that correctly. It is most of the 1972 Santana band playing with Gasca, Joe Henderson and Stanley Clarke.

Santana meets Bitches Brew is how I would describe the sound.

Luis Gasca also played trumpet in the band Malo with Carlos Santana’s brother, Jorge. Any fan of early Santana probably would dig Malo, as well.

Caravanserai seems to me the perfect balance between the latin-rock fusion of the earlier albums and the later jazz-rock oriented music of Welcome and later recordings.
Don't get me wrong, i LOVE Abraxas or even the first album but this one is very special to me.

For me tough pick , up to and through 1974 they can do no wrong.
Not much love for Alice Coltrane ? I adore Illuminations.

If you are a fan of Open Invitation you must hear the live version on Viva Santana as it truly puts the studio cut in the shade!
Disclaimer: Even if you are not IT still puts lots of stuff in the shade!!!

I only have everything until "Love Devotion Surrender" and I really like them all. I also have the live album with the Buddy Miles Band which is pretty swell. What should I try next?

Surprisingly that CD is in my collection. Recorded January 0, 1972 according to the original liner notes. Jimi Hendrix fans may be interested in comparing the track Them Changes to the version from the Band of Gypsys album.
Another interesting Santana CD is the belatedly released Live At the Fillmore '68. Very early stuff!
