The 2010 and 2017 Black boxes are both by Analogue Productions. The first one was 180g and pressed at Pallas the second was 200g and pressed at QRP. I have the first one.

I think box sets typically work best as various artist comps. These generally all have tons of songs that are otherwise hard to gather in one place, and in some cases have great unreleased/rare tracks, without too much redundant material.

Bob Dylan - The Original Mono Recordings. (Four of my top five albums of all time are in this set and the preferred versions)
The Beatles - The Beatles In Mono (I prefer the MONO to the stereo for all of these albums besides the White Album.)
The Velvet Underground - Peel Slowly and See (I bought this without ever having heard the band based on reputation alone. My mind was blown.)
The Misfits - Black Coffin (I know these are remixed versions this is what got me into the band and Danzig)
Bob Dylan - Bootleg Series 1-3 (Came out at the time I was first getting into Dylan so all that material at once was and still is amazing.)

I hate the fact that both of these sets aren't complete. At least the UK stereo set has every album in it!

The Who - Quadrophenia Super Deluxe Edition Box Set 2011
Mansun - Attack of The Grey Lantern Deluxe Box Set 2018
The Beatles - The White Album Super Deluxe Edition 2018
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon Immersion Edition 2011
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here Immersion Edition 2011
Simple Minds - New Gold Dream Super Deluxe Edition 2016
The Police - Message in a Box 1993
The Cult - Love Omnibus Edition Box Set 2009
David Bowie - Five Years Box Set 2015
David Bowie - Who Can I Be Now? Box Set 2016

As good as the Quadrophenia set is, it loses a few brownie points for not having the 5.1 mix of the album on it, thankfully rectified on the Live in London set a few years later.

  19. 1.The Beatles-One of my favorite albums by the band digs in and provides us with demos and alternate world versions in a nicely packed set.
    2. Mental Train-Mott a The Hoople. Despite its flaws (at least three missing songs that were released elsewhere), the wrong version of a song and liner notes that have plenty of errors, this nice set captures the bulk of the best material that amott did during their Island years. Frankly, they deserved this twenty years ago. Need to be 8n the RNRHOF before Ian and Verden pass.
    3. Ian Hunter-Stranded in Reality. Ian’s nearly complete discography with four discs of TV performances/outtak s/demos handsomely designed with an autograph from Ian. This is how it should be done.
    4. Roxy Music-Roxy Music. A handsome, beautifully designed set with one major flaw (including the remaster rather than the remix by Steve Wilson of the main album on CD) filled with material for the BBC, rehearsals and outtakes. It’s a marvelous set that keeps on giving in the form of the hardback book. Why aren’t these guys in the RNRHOF. They were more influential than some of the other artists (Bon Jovi I’m looking at you) in there.
    5. Paul McCartney and Wings-Red Rose Speedway ( I didn’t splurge for the super deluxe set with Wild Life it was just tooexpense for what I was getting even with the exclusive CD. For that much money Paul should sign them!) this represents a transitional stage for McCartney from solo artist to and leader and the rocky second album has some delightful material including material from the original proposed double album and less less download.
    6. World Party-Arkeology. Terrific set of b sides, etc.
    7. Lloyd Cole and the Commotions Most of the rarities of Lloyd’s solo career (which is why it’s not on here) been mined for a previous set (the “Ashtray” box which is at #9) this set does a great job of collecting the bulk of the rare stuff for The Commotions.
    8. Jellyfish-Joining A Fan Club. A great set covering their demos, outtakes, b-sides. Luckily Omnivore released most 9f this stuff on the reissue of their first two albums and live set.
    9. The Zombies-Zombie Heaven. Everything The Zombies recorded and released (including. Incom0lete tracks that have survived) lovingly assembled for this set. Why aren’t these guys in the RNRHOF?

-- Can You Dig It? The '70s Soul Experience

The rest... in no particular order:

    Beatles
    -- In Mono

    Howlin' Wolf
    -- The Chess Box

Muddy Waters -- The Chess Box

"Hitsville USA (1959-1971)" -- Motown (mostly Mono) singles

The Jimi Hendrix Experience -- The Purple Box

    Bob Dylan -- Biograph

I think there's a lot of validity to your comment (note my five "VA" inclusions above, though I didn't list the Motown Box as such).
