A distinction should be made between westerns and spaghetti westerns. They are not the same thing. Some people are naming spaghetti westerns (spags, for short) as their favorites when such should be in a separate poll. The distinction between westerns and spags is important to those of us who don't take westerns lightly.

What's that Jack Nicholson film where he's hired as a bounty hunter to catch an outlaw which ends up being himself?

Me thinks you are referring to THE SHOOTING. Nicholson plays a killer but the man chasing his tail was played by Warren Oates. The film was a low-budget indy made back-to-back with RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND in 1965 and released in 1967. It was written by Carole Eastman who later wrote FIVE EASY PIECES. Also, Nicholson wrote and starred in RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND. Both films were directed by Monte Hellman and are available in a Criterion blu-ray set.

Essential 1960s westerns, the pair of them.

It might be Ride The Whirlwind. At the end Nicholson is chasing a guy on horseback he throws him to the ground but when he sees him it's actually himself he's thrown to the ground. So the mistaken identity aspect of the film has been a con all along. I think the Genesis album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is partially based on this film.

  13. I watched The War Wagon last night. It's a late 60's formulaic by the numbers western that is not among the greats. It is entertaining primarily for the energy that Kirk Douglas brings to the screen -no stunt double for him! John Wayne basically played the same character he played in Rio Bravo, McClintock and a whole bunch of Westerns made in the late 50s through the 60s. The monument valley settings also contributed to the film's quality along with a few funny lines -still this movie does really illustrate why the genre needed a good shaking up.

I'll add The Tin Star, with Henry Fonda and Anthony Perkins. Not a tremendous amount of action. More cerebral, as former lawman Fonda tries to teach neophyte Perkins about how to shoot (and when not to) and fight lawlessness. Here's one of my favorite scenes:

Otherwise, Unforgiven and perhaps the Coen Brothers' True Grit.

Completely forgettable. I can't remember a single thing about it that stood out.

    As for my three:

    1) The Outlaw Josey Wales
    2) Open Range - where the hell is the blu-ray?!
    3) Tombstone

Honorable mention: True Grit (Coen version), The Proposition, High Plains Drifter, The Wild Bunch.
