Every band in the 70's needed a classic double live album in a cool gatefold with concert photos on the inside etc. I'm always mesmerized by those even when they're not so good (hello Stones!). So what are your favorites and why?

It has to be Waiting For Columbus by Little Feat. It captures the band at their best, with a little bit of boogie, but a whole lot of groove.

    Only one for me...

I wore the grooves out on my KISS Alive. That record has it all: excruciatingly lengthy drum solo, lots of on-stage banter from Paul, Ace was playing great and even though you couldn't see it, the musical pauses and variations let you know there was a helluva show being put on. It made you want to see them 'cause ultimately, they were a live band; anything else really wasn't much to write home about to that point. KISS at their zenith, and IMHO, the only real essential album they made.

    Henry Cow - Concerts
Frank Zappa / The Mothers - Roxy & Elsewhere
    Genesis - Seconds Out
Gentle Giant - Playing The Fool
    Magma - Live

Sad that ELP and Yes issued triples, so they don't count. Also sad that Lou Reed wasn't a band. Even sadder still that Roxy Music and King Crimson only got to release single live LPs.

Recorded partially in 1980. Released in 1980.

But yes, great live album. In my top 5 of all time.

    Genesis - Seconds Out
    Yes - Yessongs
    Neil Young - Live Rust
The Grateful Dead - Live/Dead (it was 1969 maybe, but oh well)
Dire Straits - Alchemy (I know this was early 80's but great)

I've never bought or been too big on live albums, though ... so I had to stretch a bit on the last two :D

Well, there is the very album that turned me on to rock and roll...

    Alive II: Kiss 1977

The other four would have to be...

Alive!: Kiss 1975 (A trend seems to be happening here) :)
    Frampton Comes Alive! 1976
    Live! Bootleg: Aerosmith 1978
Wings Over America 1976 (I'm actually cheating here since this is a TRIPLE album).

I would have liked to have added Zeppelin's "The Song Remains The Same" from 1976, but I actually like the expanded 2007 soundtrack box even better! So THAT would be the one I would reference. Despite it being 4 LP's and not 2.

Those gatefold covers were handy for separating out the seeds from the good stuff!
