(I'm not counting people who were in other well-known bands before forming a new group or going solo; likewise not counting those who had a bunch of hits for years before someone issued their first album):

    Blossom Dearie (1957)

The Beatles -- Please Please Me (1963): My co-favorite Beatle album. The fresh energy is unsurpassable.

The Byrds -- Mr. Tambourine Man (1965)

    The Doors (1967)

    R.E.M. -- Murmur (1983)

    Sinead O'Connor -- The Lion & The Cobra (1987)

The Stone Roses (1989): One of the few perfectly realized albums, ever. Combines 60s' and punk aesthetics, with flawless and inspired songwriting.

The La's (1990): Lee Mavers hated it. He's an idiot.

Liz Phair -- Exile In Guyville (1993)

Counting Crows -- August & Everything After (1993)

    Runner-Up:
The Bangles -- All Over The Place (1984)
    Tracy Chapman (1988)
