There is a great interview with George Duke posted on the web. He talks about playing with Zappa, and Frank putting out some Doo Wop style music for the band. George said he was trained in the Academy and had been playing with world class jazz musicians, so he was getting a little annoyed with the composition.

He said that Frank took him to school, and asked “What’s the matter George is this beneath you?”

The bottom line is George Duke then says that Frank taught him, “It doesn’t have to be heavy, to be HEAVY.”

    I always loved that.

I didn't think you addressed at me personally - my comment reflected that your stereotypes were incorrect.

You made a statement that broadly came across as "prog fans smart, prog foes dumb".

I could toss out some nasty stereotypes about prog fans if I wanted, but I won't...

Well again, I never used any terms like "smart" and "dumb". My post addressed the issues of boredom and patience, and talent. So, you seem to be projecting, but spin away.

    Oh puh-leeze.

I'm not gonna keep going here because we're gonna get Gorted.

But you know what you intended to convey. And it wasn't as innocent as you now want to claim...

Yeah, in a rare case for me, I just put that guy on ignore without replying to anything by him. Not worth my time. If ever there was an instance of an arrogant troll, he's evidence of it. Personally I wouldn't mind if a Gort did remove all of his pretentious, pompous, arrogant & condescending replies, asides & comments. It could only improve the thread.

Bands like The Cars and Television were too new to rate

    Neil Young is Canadian.

The rest of the decade was pretty lame IMO

Who were Venom? You aren't speaking of the English Metal band that didn't release anything until the 80s, are you?

Yeah, the only reason the P didn't make my list is I was focusing strictly on artists I got into in the 70s, & though I was aware of & liked the P then, I didn't get cloned until a concert in 1984. Otherwise they'd be numero uno on my list.

In over 20 years of posting on numerous music message boards, I've never put anyone on ignore, although this guy has made me consider it already. I've only been reading his posts for a couple of weeks.

1(tie) Steely Dan & New York Dolls...IMO the only 2 truly great American artists that the 1970s created, loved & embraced as their own

2.Al Green...not a band but the premier Soul man of the decade

3.Lynyrd Skynyrd...they had designs on becoming Americas Rolling Stones & that dream came close to manisfestation, only the Stones walked with the same swagger & bravado

  25. One thing that always made Zappa unique was his ability-and willingness-to try just about anything musically.
